NEW ORLEANS, La. — Tulane could not have asked for a better first snap or a worse rest of the night. The Green Wave scored before their offense took the field, then gave the ball away six times in a 42-19 loss to UTSA on Saturday at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans.
Anthony Rogers jumped the first Roadrunners pass of the game and took it 22 yards for a touchdown. Rogers later grabbed a second interception, but the Tulane offense could not hang on to the football. UTSA turned the giveaways into points behind a running game that produced all six of its touchdowns, two of them by A’Marion Peterson from 1 and 16 yards. Quarterback Owen McCown added a 4-yard keeper before halftime.
Cooper Helmke kept Tulane within reach with a 38-yard field goal and a 33-yarder as the half ended, and the Green Wave trailed 21-13 at the break. UTSA pulled away in the third quarter on a 9-yard Will Henderson III run, the finish of his 102-yard night, and a 5-yard run by Brandon High Jr.
Johnnie Daniels sparked a late push with an 81-yard dash on fourth down and then scored from 7 yards, but the two-point try failed and Tulane trailed 35-19. Mark Wiepert closed the scoring with a 1-yard run after one more turnover.
Trace Johnson threw for 265 yards for Tulane, and Garrett Mmahat had 62 receiving yards. The result snapped a 10-game home winning streak for the Green Wave, who fall to 3-4 and 1-2 in American Conference play while UTSA moves to 4-0 in the league.
Tulane goes on the road to face Charlotte at Jerry Richardson Stadium on Friday, Oct. 30.
