A symbolic representation of the end of a football career as the sun sets over the field.
Tyrann Mathieu, the renowned safety in the NFL, has officially announced his retirement at the age of 33. His decision follows a challenging season with the New Orleans Saints, where he dealt with various injuries. Despite expected expectations for his return, Mathieu shared his gratitude for his football career in a heartfelt retirement statement and emphasized that this is a transition rather than a farewell. With a career spanning 12 seasons and multiple accolades, including three All-Pro selections, Mathieu leaves a notable legacy in the sport.
New Orleans, LA – Tyrann Mathieu, an influential figure in the National Football League (NFL), officially announced his retirement from the sport on Tuesday via an Instagram post. At 33 years old, Mathieu’s decision comes as he was approaching his fourth season with the New Orleans Saints after successful tenures with multiple teams in the league.
Mathieu recently renegotiated his contract with the Saints in March, and he had participated in minicamp, leading many to anticipate his return for the upcoming Week 1 matchup of the season. However, his announcement comes after a challenging 2024 campaign where he played through injuries, including issues with his shoulder, heel, groin, and forearm.
In his retirement statement, Mathieu expressed profound gratitude for his football journey, labeling it as “nothing short of a blessing.” He emphasized that the sport has provided him with purpose and a sense of community throughout his life. Furthermore, he expressed appreciation for his coaches, teammates, and fans who supported him during his career. Mathieu made it clear that his retirement is not a farewell, but rather a transition into the next chapter of his life.
Drafted in the third round (69th overall) by the Arizona Cardinals in 2013, Mathieu made a significant impact in the league early in his career following his recognition as a Heisman finalist at LSU in 2011. Over five seasons with the Cardinals, he achieved notable success, including a first-team All-Pro selection in 2015. Mathieu then signed with the Houston Texans for the 2018 season before making a notable move to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019.
With the Chiefs, Mathieu played a key role in the team’s Super Bowl-winning season in 2021. During his tenure with the Chiefs, he garnered two additional first-team All-Pro selections. In 2022, he returned home to New Orleans, where he became a key player for the Saints, starting all 17 games from 2022 to 2024.
Throughout his distinguished 12-season NFL career, Mathieu recorded impressive statistics, including 838 total tackles, 45 tackles for loss, and 36 interceptions, four of which he returned for touchdowns. He forced seven fumbles, contributing significantly to his teams’ defensive efforts. His consistency is highlighted by his participation in 180 games with 171 starting appearances.
Mathieu has received recognition as a three-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler. He is also celebrated as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2010s All-Decade team, marking him as one of the premier players of his generation. General Manager Mickey Loomis of the New Orleans Saints acknowledged the respect and admiration held for Mathieu’s accomplishments and character within the organization and the broader football community.
Known by his nickname “Honey Badger,” Mathieu dominated the field with a fearless style of play, which stood out even more considering his smaller stature as a safety in the NFL. His remarkable achievements throughout his career have sparked discussions regarding his potential candidacy for the Hall of Fame, with many considering his combination of talent, longevity, and success in the league a strong case.
Mathieu’s retirement coincides with the recent announcements of other NFL players stepping away from the game, including Philip Rivers, further marking a notable shift in the league as it enters a new era of players.
