New Orleans – Tyrann Mathieu, the renowned safety for the New Orleans Saints, has formally announced his retirement from the NFL as of July 22, 2025. The 33-year-old player, a Louisiana native, revealed his decision through a heartfelt message on social media, expressing deep appreciation for his football journey and the community that has supported him throughout his career.
Mathieu’s illustrious career spanned 12 seasons, featuring notable tenures with the Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, and finally, the New Orleans Saints. He has been a distinctive figure in the league, known for his fierce playing style and dedication, earning him the affectionate nickname, “Honey Badger.”
Throughout his extensive career, Mathieu recorded impressive statistics, including 631 solo tackles, 111 sacks, and 36 interceptions, which garnered him a total of 530 yards—four of those resulting in touchdown returns, known as pick-sixes. In addition, he forced seven fumbles and defended 106 passes.
