Tyrann Mathieu, the celebrated safety for the New Orleans Saints, has announced his retirement from the NFL, expressing gratitude for his football journey and the community’s support. Over a 12-season career, Mathieu made a significant impact with teams like the Arizona Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs, earning accolades and a Super Bowl championship. His decision marks the end of an era in the league, as Mathieu plans to remain involved in the football community post-retirement.

New Orleans – Tyrann Mathieu, the renowned safety for the New Orleans Saints, has formally announced his retirement from the NFL as of July 22, 2025. The 33-year-old player, a Louisiana native, revealed his decision through a heartfelt message on social media, expressing deep appreciation for his football journey and the community that has supported him throughout his career.

Mathieu’s illustrious career spanned 12 seasons, featuring notable tenures with the Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, and finally, the New Orleans Saints. He has been a distinctive figure in the league, known for his fierce playing style and dedication, earning him the affectionate nickname, “Honey Badger.”

Throughout his extensive career, Mathieu recorded impressive statistics, including 631 solo tackles, 111 sacks, and 36 interceptions, which garnered him a total of 530 yards—four of those resulting in touchdown returns, known as pick-sixes. In addition, he forced seven fumbles and defended 106 passes. Notably, he also played a pivotal role in securing a Super Bowl championship in 2020 with the Kansas City Chiefs by defeating the San Francisco 49ers.

In his recent seasons with the Saints, Mathieu started every game, marking a total of 17 games played over three seasons. He contributed significantly to the team’s defensive efforts, achieving ten interceptions and defending 24 passes during that period. His consistent performance earned him accolades, including being named a three-time All-Pro and a three-time Pro Bowler.

The general manager of the New Orleans Saints, Mickey Loomis, acknowledged Mathieu’s considerable contributions and legacy within the organization, expressing respect towards his decision to retire. This comes after Mathieu had restructured his contract to stay with the Saints for the upcoming season, highlighting his commitment to the team.

During his college career at LSU from 2010 to 2013, Mathieu’s talent shone through, eventually leading to his selection by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He quickly established himself as a formidable player, earning accolades along the way and becoming a valued player on each of the teams he played for.

Beyond the field, Mathieu was recognized for his community involvement, notably through his nonprofit organization, the Tyrann Mathieu Foundation, which earned him nominations for the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award from his teammates while with both the Chiefs and the Saints.

As he retires, Mathieu expressed that while he is stepping away from playing, this marks not an end, but a transition to the next chapter in his life. His statement reflects a sense of fulfillment and gratitude as he closes a significant chapter of his life, while also hinting at continued involvement in the football community.

Mathieu’s departure signifies the end of an era not just for him but also for the teams he served throughout his NFL tenure. The impact he has made, both on and off the field, is substantial and will be remembered by fans and players alike.
