The New Orleans Saints players preparing for training camp as tensions rise around contract negotiations.
As the New Orleans Saints gear up for training camp, rookie quarterback Tyler Shough remains unsigned, raising concerns about his readiness for the NFL season. Currently, only two of the 32 second-round picks from the 2025 NFL Draft have secured contracts, leaving Shough in a precarious position. His absence from training camp could hinder his development and allow competitors to gain an advantage. Meanwhile, the Saints have made various roster moves as they prepare for the season ahead.
New Orleans – As the New Orleans Saints prepare to kick off training camp on July 23rd, rookie quarterback Tyler Shough remains unsigned, leading to concerns about his readiness for the upcoming NFL season. Shough, who was drafted in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, is among a significant number of players facing contract negotiations that could impact their participation in training camp.
Currently, only two of the 32 second-round picks from this year’s draft have signed contracts. Carson Schwesinger of the Cleveland Browns and Jayden Higgins of the Houston Texans both secured fully guaranteed deals, setting a precedent that other second-round picks are now trying to follow. This situation has left Shough and 30 of his fellow second-round draftees in a holding pattern, as negotiations regarding guaranteed money continue to stall.
Recently, Ian Rapoport reported that Tre Harris, a second-round wide receiver for the Los Angeles Chargers, has officially entered a holdout due to his unsigned status. This marks him as the first holdout among the second-round picks, with analysts hinting that he may not be the last. The landscape is complicated, as disputes over contract guarantees have led to frustration among players and their agents alike, which is evident from the growing wave of holdouts.
For Shough, missing training camp could hinder his development as a player. As the only quarterback selected in the second round, he faces intense competition for a starting role against Spencer Rattler, who has also shown promising skills during organized team activities and minicamp. Both quarterbacks showcased their strengths in earlier workouts, but Shough’s absence could allow Rattler to seize an advantage in the ongoing quarterback competition.
With training camp approaching, the clock is ticking for Shough to secure a contract. While the situation appears tense, analysts believe that Shough is less likely to hold out compared to some other second-round players, given the limited time before camp starts. His willingness to participate and develop could ultimately influence his standing with the team.
In addition to the concerns surrounding Shough’s contract status, the Saints have been active in other roster moves. The organization recently signed safety Terrell Burgess and wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones to one-year contracts. Both players previously participated in the team’s rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.
Burgess brings with him four years of NFL experience, having played in 43 regular-season games. Meanwhile, Peoples-Jones has made a notable impact in previous seasons, recording 122 receptions for 1,895 yards across 58 games. These signings highlight the Saints’ efforts to bolster their depth in the roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Additionally, the Saints waived safety Millard Bradford and running back Jordan Mims as part of their roster adjustments. This is part of the team’s strategy to fine-tune its lineup ahead of training camp. Alongside Burgess and Peoples-Jones, the Saints have also signed tight end Seth Green, cornerback Jayden Price, and tackle Barry Wesley, among other transactions that have shaped the team during the offseason.
The next few days will be critical for Shough as he navigates his contract situation amidst a backdrop of burgeoning holdouts among his peers. With training camp on the horizon, the Saints are eager to solidify their team and find the best fit for their quarterback position while ensuring all players are ready for the challenges ahead.
