News Summary

Over 120 demonstrators took to the streets in New Orleans to protest President Trump’s immigration policies and military response to unrest. The peaceful gathering outside the Hale Boggs federal building featured speeches from union leaders and activists condemning recent immigration raids. Attendees expressed solidarity with detained union leader David Huerta, whose release on bond was celebrated at the event. As protests unfold nationwide, this demonstration highlights growing dissent against federal immigration enforcement strategies amidst heightened tensions.

New Orleans – Over 120 demonstrators gathered peacefully in downtown New Orleans on June 9, 2025, to protest President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. The protest took place outside the Hale Boggs federal building on Poydras Street, where protesters criticized recent immigration raids in the city as well as the administration’s military response to ongoing protests in Los Angeles.

As the event unfolded, demonstrators expressed solidarity with David Huerta, a union leader who had been recently arrested during a protest in Los Angeles. The gathering included union leaders, pro-Palestinian student groups, and advocates for immigrant rights who each delivered short speeches highlighting their concerns regarding the administration’s approaches to immigration.

A uniformed agent from the Department of Homeland Security monitored the scene from outside the federal building, although the protest remained calm despite heightened tensions and confrontational protests reported in other cities across the nation.

Initially facing heavy afternoon rains, the attendance at the event increased significantly, ultimately exceeding 120 participants. Rachel Tabor, an organizer from the immigration advocacy group Union Migrante, noted the reliance of Trump Hotel on immigrant labor, establishing a connection between local economic issues and national immigration policies. Organizers also condemned a recent immigration sweep that detained 15 migrants from Central America at a construction site for a flood control project in New Orleans.

On the same day as the New Orleans demonstration, President Trump dispatched 700 U.S. Marines to Los Angeles to secure federal buildings amidst ongoing unrest. The Navy began providing support to California National Guard units already deployed to manage the escalating situation in Los Angeles, where protests against the enforcement actions of ICE have resulted in significant clashes between protesters and police, leading to multiple arrests and the use of tear gas and rubber bullets by law enforcement.

David Huerta was released from detention on a $50,000 bond on the same day as the New Orleans protest, a development that was met with jubilation from the demonstrators when announced at the event. This news provides a stark contrast to the reactions in other U.S. cities, including New York, where protests have been reported as more confrontational, involving significant police clashes and arrests.

Nationwide, demonstrations have been organized in solidarity with those facing immigration enforcement and police response in Los Angeles, indicating a growing backlash against the administration’s immigration enforcement strategies. The events in New Orleans are part of a broader wave of activism that reflects deep concerns regarding immigration policies and enforcement actions, underscoring the atmosphere of dissent permeating many cities across the United States.
