Community members gather in remembrance of a young boy lost to a tragic school bus accident.
On April 10, a tragic accident in New Orleans resulted in the death of a 6-year-old boy, Mayson Richards, after being struck by a school bus. The child was attempting to board the bus when the driver, unaware of his presence, began to pull away. Mayson, described as a joyful and loving child, has left his family and community in deep sorrow. The bus driver has not been charged. Support efforts for Mayson’s family are underway, while the community grieves this heartbreaking loss.
New Orleans was shaken on the morning of April 10 as a heartbreaking accident took the life of a vibrant 6-year-old boy, Мayson Richards. The bright kindergartener, who attended KIPP Leadership Primary School, was struck by a school bus around 8:04 a.m. while trying to board after exiting his mother’s car.
The incident took place in the 1400 block of Desire Street, where Mayson, who had always been known for his practical mindset that was rare for someone his age, made an effort to get to school. His family has described him as an “old soul”, someone with a deep love for family and friends, who found joy in playing every single day. This tragedy, however, would mark a devastating end to a life full of promise.
As an only child of Hasaniik Richards and Brian McKinney, Mayson had dreams of becoming a baseball player one day. He spent blessed moments with his great-aunt on the West Bank, at his grandmother’s house in the Central Business District, and at his home in St. Claude. Those close to him have expressed their sorrow, as Mayson was a child filled with joy and laughter.
The unfortunate accident unfolded quickly. Reports reveal that the bus driver closed the doors and began to pull away without noticing Mayson running in front. Due to his height, he was out of the driver’s view, miscalculating the situation in a moment that would change everything. The bus, carrying 27 other children at the time of the incident, travelled a shocking 244 feet after the collision before coming to a stop.
Upon reaching the hospital, Mayson was sadly pronounced dead shortly after the incident. The bus driver, who was fully licensed and showed no signs of impairment or distraction, has not been charged, as police have ruled the event an accident.
The accident has left Mayson’s parents grappling with profound grief. In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe page was established to assist with funeral expenses, raising close to $15,000 by Thursday afternoon. His funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday at Greater Morning Star Church of Algiers, where classmates are anticipated to gather and honor Mayson by reading heartfelt poems in his memory.
The impact of this tragic event resonates far beyond Mayson’s family. Officials, including New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and representatives from NOLA Public Schools, have expressed their condolences and underscored the tragedy of the situation. Grief counseling and support services have been offered to Mayson’s classmates at KIPP Leadership Primary School, ensuring that no child navigates this loss alone.
Mayson’s family, now dealing with immense sorrow, is contemplating legal action following the accident. The police, while deeming it an accident, have raised concerns regarding the driver’s attentiveness at the time of the event. While questions linger, the focus remains on remembering a beautiful, young child whose life was tragically cut short.
As the New Orleans community grieves, Mayson’s passing serves as a reminder of how precious life is and how swiftly it can change. Let Mayson’s memory inspire kindness and a deeper awareness in our everyday lives.
