LaPlace, Louisiana – The community is mourning the loss of Michael Joseph Scallan, who passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, at the age of 68. Scallan, a dedicated family man and respected member of St. Joan of Arc Parish, is remembered for his unwavering faith, generosity, and loyalty.

Scallan leaves behind his devoted wife of 37 years, Sherri Bianchini Scallan, and two loving daughters, Ashley Lane (married to Ryan) and Alyssa Schouest (married to Jonathan). His legacy continues through his five grandchildren: Jude, Luke, Madeline, James, and Joseph. He is also survived by his mother, Evelyn Champagne Scallan, and three siblings: Stephen Scallan Jr. (married to Sandra), Sheryl Nicolay (married to Steve), and Terry Bourlet (married to Brett). Michael was preceded in death by his father, Stephen Scallan Sr., and his granddaughter Morgan Ann Lane.

A native of Reserve, Louisiana, Scallan has been a long-time resident of LaPlace, where he made a significant impact on the community. He was the valedictorian at Riverside Academy and went on to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana State University (LSU), enjoying a successful 40-year career with Monsanto.

Michael was a devoted member of the Catholic faith and was actively involved in St. Joan of Arc Parish, where he served on the school board and pastoral council for several years. His commitment to his church and community reflected his values and deep connections with his faith. Scallan was known for being a role model, admired for his integrity and kindness. His life was centered around his family, faith, and the joys of being a “pawpaw”, a role he cherished and found immense joy in, as he often spent quality time with his grandchildren, imparting love and wisdom.

As a fan of the LSU Tigers, Michael enjoyed sports, but he also pursued hobbies that included gardening, visiting casinos with family, and spending time at the beach. He bravely fought brain cancer, demonstrating resilience and unwavering love for his family and faith throughout his battle.

The community, family, and friends are deeply saddened by Michael’s passing. They express gratitude to Sister Dulce Maria and the staff at Cypress Springs Mercedarian Prayer Center, as well as the nurses and staff at Foundations Hospice, for their compassionate care and support during his illness.

A visitation for Michael Joseph Scallan will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025, at 11 am at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, located at 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. A Funeral Mass will follow at 2 pm, with interment at All Saints Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, Michael’s family requests that donations be made to Cypress Springs Mercedarian Prayer Center or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The family invites the community to share thoughts and memories online at www.lakelawnmetairie.com.
