Louisiana residents waiting in line for REAL ID at the OMV

News Summary

As the May 7 deadline approaches for REAL ID compliance, Louisiana residents are flocking to the Office of Motor Vehicles to obtain their IDs. With about 30% having secured a REAL ID, many are still unprepared, leading to increased wait times and a surge in applications. Officials assure that REAL IDs will still be available after the deadline, while emphasizing alternative forms of ID for travel. The push for REAL ID stems from enhanced security measures enacted post-9/11, and Louisiana remains committed to facilitating the process for its residents.

Louisiana – With the deadline for obtaining REAL ID-compliant licenses looming, Louisiana residents flooded the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) on May 5, 2025. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has mandated that, starting May 7, travelers must present REAL ID-compliant identification for domestic flights, leading to a rush as the deadline approaches.

As it stands, approximately 1.25 million Louisiana residents, or about 30% of those with ID, have successfully obtained a state-issued REAL ID as of May 1, 2025. However, with approximately 3.9 million registered drivers’ licenses and identification cards in the state, a significant percentage of residents remain without the necessary identification.

In the first four months of 2025, the state experienced a surge in applications, issuing over 180,000 REAL IDs, despite facing technical interruptions that caused long wait times for applicants. These delays were primarily due to an outdated OMV software system. However, improvements in system efficiency seen in April allowed for timely processing of more than 97,000 REAL ID applications that month, representing an 8% increase from the same period the previous year.

High volumes of customers visiting field offices have been reported as residents scramble to secure compliant IDs before the deadline. OMV officials, including interim Commissioner Bryan J. Adams, have expressed pride in their staff’s efforts to accommodate the increased demand and have thanked the public for their patience during this busy period.

Despite the looming deadline, officials have emphasized that May 7 is not the final date for obtaining a REAL ID. Louisiana will continue to issue these IDs beyond this date, encouraging residents not to feel rushed. Travelers who do not secure a REAL ID before the deadline still have alternatives; they can use a passport or another TSA-approved form of identification to fly domestically. Children under 18 traveling with a companion are not required to provide ID.

To qualify for a REAL ID in Louisiana, applicants must present proof of identity, their Social Security number, and evidence of residence. Acceptable documents include a passport, birth certificate, utility bills, and tax returns. The cost for obtaining a REAL ID is $32.25, mirroring the fee for a non-compliant license, with no additional charges for duplicates or renewals.

The REAL ID Act was enacted in 2005 following the September 11 attacks to bolster national security. Its implementation has faced numerous delays primarily due to states’ adjustments to meet compliance requirements. Currently, only 32% of Louisiana residents have secured a REAL ID license. This statistic urges counties to act quickly as the deadline approaches.

Following the deadline on May 7, travelers who do not possess a REAL ID-compliant identification may encounter extra procedures at TSA checkpoints, potentially leading to longer wait times or additional verification steps. The recent scramble for REAL IDs highlights both the urgency behind compliance with federal identification mandates and the ongoing challenges related to processing applications in a timely manner.
