A dramatic jailbreak on May 16 led to the escape of ten inmates from the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility, resulting in a statewide manhunt. The escaped inmates include two murder suspects, Jermaine Donald and Corey Boyd, as authorities investigate potential inside assistance in the escape. Surveillance footage revealed the inmates crawled through a concealed hole and scaled a barbed wire fence. Governor Jeff Landry has issued bounties for the escapees and announced an audit of the facility, amidst rising concerns over safety and management issues within the jail.
New Orleans – A dramatic jailbreak at the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility on May 16 has resulted in the escape of ten inmates, sparking a manhunt in the surrounding areas, particularly in New Orleans. Two murder suspects, Jermaine Donald, 42, and Corey Boyd, 19, remain at large, prompting Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to issue a strong warning against any jail staff who may have aided the escapees.
Surveillance footage of the incident revealed that inmates crawled through a concealed hole behind a toilet, scaled a barbed wire fence, and ran across a nearby highway into a residential neighborhood. Alongside the escape hole, the fugitives left messages reading “To Easy LOL” and “WE INNOCENT.”
Governor Landry expressed concerns that the majority of the escapees are still in Louisiana, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. He has placed bounties of $20,000 on the heads of each of the escaped inmates and announced an audit of the Orleans Correctional Facility following the incident. Furthermore, he issued a directive to remove all state Department of Corrections inmates from the local facility, citing ongoing issues with management and safety.
In addition to Donald and Boyd, the other escapees include Lenton Vanburen, Derrick Groves, Gary Price, Leo Tate, and Antoine Massey. While Donald faces multiple charges, including aggravated battery and possession of a firearm by a felon, Boyd is charged with attempted second-degree murder and illegal carrying of weapons. Massey, who has taken to social media to assert his innocence, is also wanted for charges of domestic abuse, theft of a motor vehicle, and has a warrant out for second-degree rape.
The escape has raised suspicions that inside assistance may have facilitated the incident, as a female civilian employee is reported to have left her post shortly before the jailbreak occurred. Authorities are continuing to search for Donald and Boyd, warning that they may have attempted to travel out of state, with reports indicating that eight of the escapees have already been recaptured.
The alarmingly high increase in inmate-on-inmate violence at the Orleans Parish facility, reportedly rising by about 150% under the current sheriff, has further intensified scrutiny of the jail’s conditions and management. Coupled with the overcrowding issues, which impede staff from maintaining security, the escape highlights long-standing problems within the facility.
As the manhunt progresses, law enforcement is urging residents to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the fugitives or any information concerning their whereabouts. With the heightened stakes and public safety concerns, the situation remains critical as authorities work quickly to restore safety and security in the community.
