Authorities in New Orleans are in a state of alarm after seven inmates escaped from Orleans Parish Jail during a headcount. Surveillance footage revealed pre-planned actions used to breach jail security. While three escapees have been recaptured, warnings have been issued to the public to stay cautious as some inmates may be armed. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are involved in the search for the remaining fugitives, raising concerns about jail management and community safety.
New Orleans, Louisiana – A massive manhunt is underway for seven inmates who escaped from Orleans Parish Jail on Friday, raising serious safety concerns within the community. The inmates’ escape was discovered during a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m., which revealed that 11 individuals were unaccounted for, leading to immediate alarm measures.
Surveillance footage recorded the night of the breakout showed at least 10 inmates breaking out from their cells. They managed to scale a fence and flee the facility, exploiting weaknesses in jail security. Authorities have confirmed that three of the escapees—Kendell Myles, Robert Moody, and Dkenan Dennis—have already been captured and transferred to a secure state facility. Myles was located hidden under a car in the French Quarter, while Dennis was found near Chef Menteur Highway.
The escapees breached jail security by creating a hole behind a toilet and used tools to cut through various fixtures, a clear indication of pre-planning. As part of the immediate response, Sheriff Susan Hutson noted that there are signs suggesting the escapees may have received inside assistance. Following this alarming event, three jail employees have been suspended while an internal investigation is conducted.
Reports indicate some of the inmates may be armed and dangerous, prompting law enforcement to issue warnings to the public. They have advised community members to avoid approaching the escapees. Collaboratively, local and federal law enforcement agencies have mobilized more than 200 personnel, scouring neighborhoods and various locations in search of the fugitives. The FBI is also deeply involved in the investigation and is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the capture of the remaining inmates.
All escapees are reported to be aged between 19 and 42 and are facing serious criminal charges, including murder and armed robbery. They left a message at the escape site, marked with phrases such as “To Easy LoL” and “We Innocent.” This act of brevity indicates a level of audacity among the inmates that raises more questions regarding jail management.
Security breaches at the facility have been attributed to defective locks and a significant shortage of staff, with the jail operating at only 60% of its required staffing levels. Sheriff Hutson has called attention to the urgent need for repair work and improved staffing to prevent future incidents. In light of the escape, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry underscored the commitment of authorities to ensure the recapture of the remaining escapees, stating they would “hunt each of you down.”
Criticism has emerged regarding the authorities’ handling of the situation, particularly regarding the delay in notifying the public about the escape. Local officials have faced pressure to improve communication concerning public safety, an issue voiced by Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams, who expressed frustration over the lack of timely updates on the escapees’ whereabouts.
Meanwhile, investigators are actively reviewing communications and interviewing jail staff to piece together how the escape was successfully orchestrated.
