Orleans Justice Center where ten inmates escaped, raising concerns about security.
A dramatic jailbreak occurred at the Orleans Justice Center, where ten inmates escaped early Friday morning. Local law enforcement and the FBI are collaborating to locate the fugitives, offering a reward for information. The escape involved tampering with a cell door and breaching a wall, raising serious concerns about security measures within the facility. As authorities investigate the incident and the potential inside assistance, the urgency to recapture those still at large is paramount, particularly given the serious charges many of the escapees face.
New Orleans – Ten inmates successfully escaped from the Orleans Justice Center early Friday morning, prompting an extensive search by local law enforcement and the FBI, which is offering a reward for information leading to their capture.
The dramatic escape took place around 12:23 a.m. when the detainees tampered with a locked cell door. Once they breached this door, the inmates forced their way through a wall situated behind a toilet, eventually exiting the facility through a loading dock door. They climbed over an outside wall and ran across the interstate, dispersing into a nearby residential area.
Authorities did not discover the escape until 8:30 a.m. during a routine head count, leading to heightened concerns over the security of the facility. At the time of the escape, the Orleans Justice Center was under lockdown; however, three of the security cameras in the unit were inoperable, preventing officials from obtaining a clear view of the escape events. Alarmingly, it has been reported that approximately one-third of the jail’s cameras are currently not functioning, prompting the suspension of three employees pending an investigation into the extensive security lapses.
In the immediate aftermath of the escape, one inmate, Kendell Myles, was located hiding beneath a car and was subsequently rebooked for simple escape. Two additional inmates, Robert Moody and Dkenan Dennis, were captured later that day. The remaining escapees are still at large and are considered armed and dangerous, with many facing serious charges, including murder.
The FBI has placed a reward of up to $5,000 for tips that could lead to the apprehension of the remaining fugitives. Law enforcement is actively engaging with other agencies and has ramped up efforts to search for the escapees, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
Authorities suspect that the jailbreak may have been aided by individuals inside the jail, as Sheriff Susan Hutson indicated that it would have been unlikely for the escapees to execute this plan without inside assistance. During the escape, the inmates also utilized blankets to mitigate the risk of injury from barbed wire surrounding the facility.
The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office is undertaking its own investigation into the security failures that allowed this escape to occur. Reports indicate that the jail is significantly understaffed, lacking approximately 150 deputies needed for effective supervision. The facility has also faced challenges due to insufficient funding for necessary security upgrades, which could have potentially prevented such a breach.
The inmates who escaped have been identified as Corey Boyd, Dkenan Dennis, Jermaine Donald, Derrick Groves, Antoine Massey, Robert Moody, Kendell Myles, Gary Price, Leo Tate, and Lenton Vanburen. The severity of the crimes for which many of these individuals were incarcerated adds an additional layer of urgency to their capture.
As the search continues, local authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could assist in recapturing the escapees. The implications of this incident have raised questions about the overall security and staffing challenges faced by the Orleans Justice Center, contributing to ongoing discussions about necessary reforms within the facility.
