New Orleans – In a significant security breach at the Orleans Justice Center, ten inmates escaped from the facility early Friday morning by creating a hole behind a toilet. The incident occurred around 1 a.m., during which time a single staff member assigned to monitor their cell pod left the area briefly to obtain food. The escape went unnoticed for over seven hours until a routine headcount revealed the missing inmates at 8:30 a.m.
Surveillance footage has shown some of the escapees, who were dressed in a mix of orange and white prison clothing, using blankets to scale a fence to evade barbed wire. They then dashed across the interstate into a nearby neighborhood. In a concerning twist, messages were left at the escape site, reading “To Easy LoL” and “catch us when you can.” Authorities indicate that the escape was likely facilitated by individuals within the sheriff’s department, suggesting a possibility of inside help.
As of the latest reports, three of the ten escapees have been recaptured within hours of the incident. This includes 20-year-old Kendall Myles, who was previously facing attempted murder charges and was rebooked for simple escape following a foot chase. Additionally, 21-year-old Robert Moody was arrested due to a tip received via Crime Stoppers, while Dkenan Dennis was found near an eastern New Orleans highway. The remaining seven escapees, aged between 19 and 42, include suspects charged with serious crimes such as murder, leading authorities to label them as armed and dangerous.
Authorities are actively pursuing the remaining fugitives with a coordinated manhunt involving law enforcement agencies, including the FBI. Rewards have been offered for information leading to their capture. There are heightened concerns regarding the safety of the public, as victims connected to some of those still at large have already been notified about the potential risk.
Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson expressed that defective locks on some cells were a contributing factor to the escape, amplifying concerns about the overall infrastructure and staffing of the jail. The facility is currently operating at approximately 60% staffing capacity, which has raised alarms about the ability to manage inmate safety and security effectively. Further investigations revealed that at least one steel bar protecting plumbing fixtures appeared to have been deliberately cut, signaling potential premeditation by the escapees.
In response to the escape, three jail employees have been suspended as investigations into their involvement continue. Questions regarding the execution of protocols and the communication of the escape to the public have led to scrutiny of the New Orleans Mayor and law enforcement officials, with calls for accountability growing louder. Attorney General Liz Murrill has also requested a thorough investigation into the procedural failures related to the incident.
This escape marks a significant concern in the management of the Orleans Justice Center, raising issues not only about security measures but also about the potential need for systemic changes in oversight and operational standards. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the intricacies of the escape and prevent such events from happening in the future.
