The city is committed to creating safer commuting conditions for children and families in the community.
New Orleans – The City of New Orleans Department of Public Works is set to enhance safety in school zones by implementing new roadway markings in compliance with Louisiana Senate Bill 99 (Act 107). This initiative follows the law’s implementation on August 1, aimed at improving the visibility of school zones and ensuring the safety of children commuting to and from schools.
The new regulations enforce the installation of 24-inch yellow transverse stripes across roadways at school zone entries. These yellow stripes will be placed approximately 200 feet before each school zone sign and directly at the sign itself. To further inform drivers, the markings will feature 1-foot-tall white letters stating either “ENTERING SCHOOL ZONE” or “SCHOOL ZONE AHEAD,” depending on the specific location.
The locations identified for these new markings include:
- 2700 block of S. Carrollton Ave
- 3100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd
- 1500 block of Broadway St
- 2400 block of Orleans Ave
- 11100 block of Lake Forest Blvd
- 4500 block of Wilson Ave
- 5000 block of Bullard Ave
- 3800 block of St. Bernard Ave
- 2300 block of St. Charles Ave (including both the 2200 and 1400 blocks)
- 3000 block of Canal St (currently on hold due to ongoing paving work)
In addition to the new markings, automated traffic enforcement cameras have already been installed in these school zones. However, the cameras, which are designed to promote safe driving behaviors, are not yet activated. Their activation will occur once a formal agreement with the Orleans Parish School Board is finalized, after which enforcement will begin.
Currently, there is no active enforcement in the school zones while the new markings are being installed. The Department of Public Works is urging drivers to remain vigilant during this period to ensure safety for all around school premises. Residents are encouraged to reach out to the Department of Public Works at 504-658-8000 for more information regarding these changes and updates.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the New Orleans government to enhance safety measures near schools. By improving roadway signage and visibility in school zones, the city aims to create a safer environment for children and families. As the installation process unfolds, city officials are requesting patience and understanding from the public as these important safety measures are put into place.
Implementation of these new roadway markings signifies a proactive approach to children’s safety in New Orleans, aligning with state mandates and community interests. As school season is underway, these enhancements are expected to make a significant difference in how drivers navigate school zones and contribute to the overall safety of the area.
