Families receiving school supplies at a community event in New Orleans

News Summary

As families get ready for the school year, local organizations in New Orleans are providing essential resources. Initiatives focus on offering school supplies, uniforms, and mentorship to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Programs like the mentorship relaunch by Big Brothers Big Sisters and community events aim to empower children and their families, ensuring they have the tools needed for a successful academic year.

New Orleans—As families prepare for the upcoming school year, local community organizations are stepping up to provide critical resources and support throughout New Orleans and neighboring regions. These initiatives aim to equip students and their families with the tools they need to start the school year on the right foot.

Various locations across the city are offering resources, including access to school supplies, uniforms, and mentorship opportunities for youth from low-income or disadvantaged backgrounds. Among the key community sites providing support are the Inspire Nola School, the Zulu drive-thru giveaway, YEP and Ochsner Children’s, The Housing Authority of New Orleans, Children’s Museum of St. Tammany, and NOLA Public Schools.

Additionally, families in Jefferson Parish can obtain school uniform vouchers based on their financial needs through their local community centers. For families in Lafourche Parish, applications for uniform vouchers are accessible at the Mathews Complex and the Thibodaux Health Unit until the maximum number of applications are received. Parents interested in more information about voucher availability in Lafourche Parish can reach out by calling 985-493-6635.

Furthermore, the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater New Orleans has recently relaunched its mentorship program after more than a decade, aimed specifically at supporting children of color from single-parent or low-income households, including those with military or incarcerated parents. The program began operations in January and has successfully matched 21 children with mentors, with an additional 75 youths currently in the enrollment process. Funded by $1 million from private donors and further supported by federal, state, and local funding sources, the initiative works to create a lasting impact on at-risk youth.

The mentorship program takes a relationship-based approach, matching “littles” (children) with “bigs” (volunteers) who share similar interests and goals. Research supports the effectiveness of mentorship in improving economic mobility, self-confidence, and emotional well-being among participants. To enhance its operations, the organization is partnering with other local mentorship groups, including Son of a Saint and KIPP New Orleans Schools.

Additionally, the community will have the opportunity to partake in the upcoming Housing Resource Fair and School Supply Giveaway, organized by District “B” Councilmember Lesli Harris. Scheduled for August 3 at the Dryades YMCA from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the event aims to provide valuable information on affordable housing initiatives while distributing essential school supplies to students. Attendees will also have the chance to connect with local leaders across various fields, including real estate, government, and finance.

The robust support from community organizations reflects a concerted effort to ensure that every child in New Orleans has access to the resources required for a successful academic year. By fostering partnerships and providing mentorship opportunities, these initiatives strive to create a nurturing environment for the city’s youth.
