A view of New Orleans during severe thunderstorms that caused widespread power outages.
New Orleans is facing significant challenges following severe thunderstorms that left over 11,000 Entergy customers without power. The storm caused extensive outages primarily in Central City, Mid-City, and Gentilly. Despite the utility company’s efforts, many residents are still awaiting power restoration as the area faces hazardous conditions and a flood advisory issued by the National Weather Service. Nearby Jefferson Parish also reported outages, illustrating the storm’s widespread impact. Local officials continue to monitor the situation and urge residents to stay informed on recovery efforts.
New Orleans is reeling from severe thunderstorms that left over 11,000 Entergy customers without power as heavy rain and strong winds swept through the area on Wednesday evening. As of late Wednesday night, significant efforts were underway to restore electricity to those affected.
Initial reports indicated that more than 10,500 customers were experiencing outages, peaking at over 11,100 residents without power by 8:33 p.m. As of 11:15 p.m., approximately 2,991 customers remained in the dark after Entergy crews worked swiftly to restore service. The outages primarily impacted neighborhoods including Central City, Mid-City, and Gentilly.
Just before 8 p.m., a blackout affecting more than 2,000 customers in the Gentilly area was reported, coinciding with the arrival of heavy thunderstorms that prompted visibility issues and hazardous conditions throughout the city. Around this time, the National Weather Service had issued a flood advisory for the New Orleans metro area, forecasting rainfall of 1-2 inches along with wind gusts reaching up to 50 mph.
In addition to the challenges faced in New Orleans, nearby Jefferson Parish reported an additional 700 customers without power. Another utility company, Cleco, also registered outages affecting around 37 customers in Covington. An Entergy spokesperson noted that the outages were believed to be directly related to the storm conditions in the region.
As storms advanced, Entergy crews were deployed to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. By 10:30 p.m., nearly half of the affected customers had their power restored, but many were still awaiting service. Storm forecasts indicated that the weather would likely begin to subside by 10 p.m., providing hope for full restoration efforts in the following hours.
The National Weather Service had initially warned of the potential for significant rainfall and winds capable of causing street flooding, urging residents to remain cautious. The areas identified as having heightened flood risk included Metairie, Marrero, Harvey, Avondale, Chalmette, Jefferson Parish, Gretna, Harahan, Westwego, and others.
The severe weather event is a reminder of the vulnerability of urban infrastructure during extreme weather incidents. Power outages in such events often lead to inconvenience and disruption for thousands of residents, particularly in densely populated urban areas like New Orleans.
The city is expected to continue monitoring the weather conditions, and residents are encouraged to stay updated on local announcements regarding power restoration efforts and safety procedures. Emergency services may also be on the alert as recovery from the storm continues.
