News Summary

Authorities have recaptured a fifth inmate, Corey Boyd, who escaped from a New Orleans jail along with four others. A maintenance worker has also been arrested for assisting the escape. The incident has raised safety concerns and prompted investigations into jail management.

New Orleans – A fifth inmate has been recaptured following a jailbreak at a New Orleans jail, which has already resulted in a significant investigation and arrest of a maintenance worker believed to have assisted in the escape. Corey Boyd, aged 19, was apprehended on May 20 after eluding authorities for several days. Boyd, who was incarcerated for serious charges including second-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery, now faces an additional charge of simple escape.

Officials have confirmed that Boyd will be moved to a secure state facility outside the New Orleans area. His capture follows the recapture of four other inmates—Kendell Myles, Robert Moody, Dkenan Dennis, and Gary Price—who were caught in the days leading up to Boyd’s arrest. Price, 36, was awaiting trial on murder and domestic abuse charges when he was caught on May 19. All four recaptured inmates are currently housed at the Louisiana State Penitentiary.

On the same day Boyd was captured, a maintenance worker named Sterling Williams, 33, was arrested in connection with the jailbreak. Williams has been charged with multiple counts for his role in enabling the escape, including being a principal to simple escape and malfeasance in office, amounting to 11 felony counts. According to Louisiana’s Attorney General Liz Murrill, Williams allegedly collaborated closely with the inmates, even complying with their demand to turn off the water supply to a cell. This action allowed the escapees to break through a wall behind a toilet and sink.

During their escape, the inmates left a message on the wall stating, “To Easy LoL,” while security footage revealed them scaling a wall and fleeing through a loading dock. Concerns have arisen regarding the methods used by the inmates to escape, and investigations reported that certain security cameras in the jail were non-operational during the incident.

So far, five inmates are still at large and are considered armed and dangerous. The remaining fugitives include Leo Tate, Jermaine Donald, Derrick Groves, Lenton Vanburen, and Antoine Massey. Local authorities have warned that the inmates may potentially have traveled to neighboring states due to a significant lead time—the jailbreak was not discovered for approximately 8 to 10 hours following their escape.

In the wake of the jailbreak, Sheriff Susan Hutson has identified procedural failures and defective locks as potential enabling factors for the escape, while District Attorney Jason Williams has expressed notable concerns regarding safety for himself and other individuals involved in prosecuting the recaptured inmates. He noted that there were concerning delays in notifying law enforcement and the public about the jailbreak.

The Louisiana Legislative Auditor has initiated an audit of the jail’s operations and management in light of the jailbreak, indicating widespread public concerns regarding the safety and management of incarceration facilities. A manhunt involving over 200 local, state, and federal officers is currently underway to locate the remaining escapees. Additionally, authorities are urging anyone who may have assisted the escapees to come forward, warning of potential prosecution for those who do not.

In their efforts to gather more information, law enforcement is actively seeking tips from the public about the whereabouts of the remaining fugitives and has offered rewards for valuable information leading to their capture. With six of the ten inmates still unaccounted for, the community remains on high alert as the investigation continues.
