New Orleans – Three inmates who escaped from a jail in New Orleans have been recaptured, leaving only two of the ten escapees still at large, according to the Louisiana State Police (LSP). The recaptured individuals are Lenton Vanburen, 26, Leo Tate, and Jermaine Donald.

Lenton Vanburen was captured in Baton Rouge, located approximately 80 miles northwest of New Orleans. In contrast, Leo Tate and Jermaine Donald were arrested in Walker County, Texas, by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Among the escapees, two individuals remain missing: Antoine T. Massey and Derrick Groves. The authorities have urged community members to report any information regarding the two individuals.

Details on Recaptured Inmates

Attorney General Liz Murrill has provided details on the charges against the recaptured inmates. Leo Tate was incarcerated previously for several serious offenses, including burglary, possession of a firearm by a felon, and attempted second-degree murder. Jermaine Donald was facing charges of second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Lenton Vanburen was detained for parole violation, illegal possession of a firearm, and illegal carrying of a weapon.

Escape Circumstances

The inmates escaped from the jail by utilizing hair snipping tools to create an exit through a toilet in the facility. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson has indicated that there are signs of possible internal assistance in the escape, leading to the suspension of certain jail employees pending an investigation.

Arrests Related to the Escape

As a result of the jailbreak, five individuals have been arrested in connection with the escape, including relatives of recaptured inmate Lenton Vanburen. Those detained include Lenton Vanburen Sr., his daughter Patricia Vanburen, and another relative, Lenika Vanburen. Both Lenton Vanburen Sr. and Patricia Vanburen are currently being held on a bond of $1 million each for charges related to being accessories after the fact.

Official Responses and Investigation

The escape has drawn significant attention and condemnation from Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, who suggested that it could potentially be the largest jailbreak in the state’s history. In response, the LSP is conducting a full investigation into the escape, which will focus on assessing jail security protocols and the performance of the staff involved.

Community Involvement

Authorities are encouraging members of the community to assist in the investigation by contacting the Louisiana State Police with any information they may have related to the escape or the remaining inmates. The situation has raised concerns about the safety and security of the area, prompting a swift response from law enforcement to address the ongoing investigation.
