Law enforcement at New Orleans jail during escape investigation

News Summary

In a alarming jailbreak from New Orleans’ main jail, a fourth inmate, Gary C. Price, has been recaptured. The escape involved ten inmates who breached a wall and fled the facility, leading to a manhunt for the remaining six. State police and multiple law enforcement agencies are involved in the search, as the situation raises concerns about jail security and infrastructure. Governor Jeff Landry has criticized local officials and initiated an investigation. A $20,000 reward is being offered for information on the remaining fugitives.

New Orleans – A fourth inmate has been captured following the recent escape of ten inmates from New Orleans’ main jail, according to a report from Louisiana State Police. The captured inmate, Gary C. Price, 21, was previously charged with first-degree murder and held without bond. He will be transferred to a secure state facility outside the New Orleans area.

As of Monday evening, six other inmates remain at large following their escape, which took place shortly after midnight on Friday. The group managed to breach a wall and create a rectangular hole behind a bathroom fixture within a cell. After removing a toilet, they exited through a loading dock door and climbed over fences before crossing Interstate 10. The escape was discovered during a headcount at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.

In addition to Price, authorities have successfully recaptured three additional escapees: Kendell Myles, Robert Moody, and Dkenan Dennis. The ongoing manhunt for the remaining six fugitives involves over 200 law enforcement personnel from local, state, and federal agencies. A reward of $20,000 has been offered for information that leads to the capture of each remaining escapee.

State Police Superintendent Col. Robert Hodges has expressed confidence that law enforcement has gathered intelligence on the whereabouts of the remaining fugitives. Meanwhile, Governor Jeff Landry has criticized the response to the jailbreak from Orleans Parish officials and has announced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.

Concerns regarding the custody of escapees have heightened, as nine of the ten individuals involved were waiting for trial on serious charges. Jail infrastructure has also come under scrutiny, with Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson acknowledging issues such as malfunctioning locks and broken security cameras. In response to these concerns, three employees from the department have been placed on leave as the investigation into potential inside assistance continues.

The New Orleans City Council has called for investigations and audits of jail protocols to ensure similar incidents do not occur in the future. Worryingly, it was reported that the inmates left a taunting message over the escape hole that read: “To Easy LOL.” This has added to the gravity of the situation as citizens remain on high alert.

Several of the escapees face significant criminal charges, including murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery. Mayor LaToya Cantrell has urged the community to remain vigilant as the manhunt persists. In light of the situation, the FBI has established a dedicated web page for tips to aid law enforcement in capturing the fugitives.

The ongoing investigation aims to thoroughly assess the conditions and security measures at the Orleans Parish jail to provide accountability for those involved, and to implement new strategies to prevent future incidents. As the search for the remaining escapees continues, authorities remain hopeful for a swift resolution to this alarming situation.
