Law enforcement activity at Orleans Parish Jail during the manhunt for Antoine Massey.
Antoine Massey, a 33-year-old inmate who escaped from Orleans Parish Jail, has been captured after six weeks on the run. He was apprehended at a residence near the jail and faces additional charges for his escape. The search continues for a convicted murderer who also escaped, while authorities investigate possible collaborators aiding Massey. Security lapses at the jail have come under scrutiny as the situation unfolds.
New Orleans – Antoine Massey, a 33-year-old inmate who escaped from the Orleans Parish Jail in New Orleans, has been captured by Louisiana authorities after being on the run for six weeks. Massey was apprehended on Friday at a residence located approximately two miles from the jail, in the Hollygrove neighborhood. Following his capture, he will face additional charges related to his escape from custody.
Massey was one of ten inmates who made a daring escape from the facility on May 16, and at the time of his escape, he was being held on multiple serious charges, including rape, kidnapping, domestic violence, and vehicle theft. Authorities report that they received a tip concerning Massey’s whereabouts around 11 a.m., and he was taken into custody by 3:30 p.m. Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated that Massey surrendered peacefully without any confrontation.
Following Massey’s capture, law enforcement officials confirmed that only one of the escapees, convicted murderer Derrick Groves, remains at large. The state is currently offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to Groves’ capture.
Authorities have suggested that Massey likely received assistance during the six weeks he was on the run. Louisiana State Police Superintendent Robert Hodges indicated there may have been collaborators providing support to Massey while he evaded capture. Prior to his arrest, Massey took to social media, posting videos in which he pleaded for help from public figures, including Donald Trump and Kim Kardashian. He portrayed himself as a victim and claimed his innocence in relation to the charges against him.
In the course of the investigation, a home connected to Massey was raided, where investigators discovered videos believed to have been produced by him. However, he was not present at the location during the raid. This incident raised suspicions of ongoing connections that may have facilitated his evasion.
Historically, Massey has a significant record of escapes. He escaped from a juvenile detention center in 2007 and successfully broke out from the Morehouse Parish Detention Center in 2019, although he was recaptured on the same day. Prior to his most recent jail break, he had also cut off two ankle monitors, indicating a repeat pattern of attempts to evade law enforcement.
In addition to Massey’s capture, a woman has been arrested and charged with obstruction of justice and aggravated escape. She is accused of being aware of Massey’s escape plans and allegedly aided him in his efforts to remain free. Furthermore, law enforcement confirmed security lapses at the Orleans Parish Jail contributed to the jailbreak, with inmates taking advantage of faulty locks on cell doors and other vulnerabilities.
A maintenance worker has also been arrested for allegedly assisting in the escape, with accusations that he disabled the water supply to a toilet behind which the inmates created an escape hole.
Massey’s case continues to draw attention due to both his history of escaping and the circumstances surrounding his latest flight from justice. As authorities work to apprehend Derrick Groves, the focus remains on ensuring that such security vulnerabilities are addressed to prevent future incidents.
