Intensified Manhunt for Dangerous New Orleans Fugitives

News Summary

Authorities in New Orleans are ramping up their search for fugitives Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey, who recently escaped from Orleans Justice Center. Groves, facing a life sentence for violent crimes, has a troubling criminal history, including multiple convictions for murder. Massey, known for his repeated escape attempts over two decades, is also deemed extremely dangerous. With a $20,000 reward for their capture and concerns over jail security, law enforcement urges the community to remain vigilant and report any sightings.

New Orleans – Nearly two weeks after the daring escape from Orleans Justice Center, authorities are intensifying their manhunt for two fugitives, Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey. Both men are considered extremely dangerous, with Groves facing a life sentence for serious violent crimes and Massey having a prolonged history of escape attempts.

Derrick Groves, 27, has a criminal background that includes convictions for two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of manslaughter. His charges relate to violent incidents, notably a double homicide during Mardi Gras in 2018 that sent shockwaves through the New Orleans community. In a tragic twist of fate, Groves is also the grandson of Kim Groves, who was murdered in 1994 as part of a corruption scheme involving the New Orleans Police Department. Although he was born after his grandmother’s death, her story has profoundly impacted Groves’ life. He was convicted in October 2024 and was awaiting a life sentence that had been scheduled for July when he managed to escape.

Since the escape, prosecutors in Groves’ case have reportedly fled the state, fearing retaliation from associates connected to him. Law enforcement officials believe this highlights the severity of the threat that Groves poses.

Antoine Massey, the second fugitive, has a nearly 20-year history of escaping from various detention facilities. Since his first escape in 2007, when he used shackles to break a window at a juvenile detention center, Massey has evaded capture multiple times. His most recent attempt occurred shortly after being fitted with an ankle monitor, which he cut off mere hours later. Authorities believe he may have threatened a jail maintenance worker to facilitate their escape, resulting in criminal charges against that worker.

A reward of $20,000 is being offered for information leading to the captures of Groves and Massey. A broad array of law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and Louisiana State Police, are actively involved in the search effort. Additional concerns surrounding jail security have arisen, with 14 individuals linked to aiding the escapees having already been arrested.

Of the ten inmates who broke free, eight have already been recaptured, with arrests occurring in both Louisiana and Texas. The jailbreak itself happened on May 16, during which the escapees exploited broken locks and made use of a hole behind a toilet to access a supply dock, demonstrating significant failures in jail security protocols.

The situation at Orleans Justice Center has highlighted critical shortcomings in jail management, particularly concerning non-functioning surveillance cameras and inadequate monitoring of inmates. These lapses have prompted calls for immediate reform to ensure the safety of the facility.

Law enforcement officials stress that both Groves and Massey are extremely dangerous and urge the public to report any information regarding their whereabouts. The ongoing manhunt underscores the challenges faced by authorities in managing violent offenders and maintaining safety within the community.
