Law enforcement agencies are working diligently to locate fugitives in New Orleans amid rising costs and public concern.
The search for fugitives Antoine Massey and Derrick Groves enters its third week following a major jail escape in New Orleans. Authorities have captured eight escapees, but the manhunt remains critical with both men considered dangerous. Rising costs of search operations and ongoing community involvement highlight the complexities of achieving public safety as law enforcement agencies join forces to locate the fugitives.
New Orleans – The manhunt for fugitives Antoine Massey and Derrick Groves has entered its third week, continuing 18 days after one of the largest jail escapes in New Orleans history occurred on May 16. A total of 10 inmates escaped from the Orleans Justice Center, with eight captured and more than 16 individuals arrested for allegedly assisting in their escape.
Despite the capture of eight inmates, authorities are still actively searching for Massey and Groves, both of whom are considered dangerous. Massey, who has a history of escape attempts, is under scrutiny as investigators analyze videos circulating on social media that may feature him. In one of the videos, Massey claims to be one of the escapees and asks for help from public figures, including famous rappers and political figures, while also protesting allegations against him regarding threats made towards a maintenance worker. He further describes the jail system as “corrupted.”
Meanwhile, Groves has a violent past linked to a double homicide in 2018, which has prompted law enforcement agencies to treat him as a significant threat. The dangers posed by both fugitives have led to an extensive law enforcement operation, including involvement from over 200 federal, state, and local officers from agencies such as the FBI, U.S. Marshals, ATF, and the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD).
The financial implications of the manhunt are mounting significantly. Experts estimate that local law enforcement efforts could lead to operational costs nearing $500,000, largely driven by increased overtime for officers. Various criminal charges have also been filed against individuals arrested for aiding the escape, including instances where accomplices allegedly paid for hotels for the escaped inmates.
As the search progresses, authorities have begun to shift their focus toward Natchez, Mississippi, where Massey was reportedly spotted. The ongoing search has highlighted the collaboration between different law enforcement agencies to ensure public safety amid concerns about the fugitive’s potential actions.
The escape incident has raised serious questions regarding the management of the Orleans Justice Center. The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office is facing criticism for its oversight, including issues related to staffing and operational spending. The situation has led to widespread scrutiny of the jail’s conditions and the handling of inmate management, calling into question long-standing practices.
In light of these developments, Sheriff Susan Hutson has publicly urged Massey to surrender in order to avoid further legal consequences. The urgency of the situation is compounded by the belief that some of the individuals arrested during this operation have been released on bond, highlighting potential gaps in the enforcement of laws concerning aid to fugitives.
In response to the ongoing threat posed by Massey and Groves, law enforcement has increased its efforts to track down these fugitives. A reward of $50,000 has been offered for information leading to their arrest, a sum raised through contributions from various organizations. This move aims to engage the public and enhance community involvement in the search efforts.
As the manhunt continues, authorities remain vigilant in their pursuit of justice while addressing the broader issues raised by this escape. With the collaboration of various agencies and the community, law enforcement aims to bring the fugitives to justice and restore safety to the New Orleans area.
