New Orleans – The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) is currently investigating two separate homicide cases and an additional shooting that all occurred early Saturday morning, resulting in one death and one injury. The incidents appear to be unrelated and unfolded throughout different areas of the city.
The first incident took place at approximately 12:47 a.m. in the 1800 block of Hollygrove, where police received a call indicating a situation was developing. Upon arrival, officers found an adult male who was later pronounced dead at the scene. While initial reports suggested the victim succumbed to a gunshot wound, further investigation revealed that the actual cause of death was blunt force trauma rather than gunfire.
At 2:57 a.m., a second shooting was reported at the intersection of North Dorgenois Street and Elysian Fields Avenue. An adult male was shot multiple times and was transported to a local hospital via a private vehicle. As of now, the victim’s condition remains undetermined.
The third incident occurred at around 7:55 a.m. in the 3200 block of Dumaine Street. NOPD confirmed significant details regarding this incident shortly after, at approximately 8:19 a.m. Officers discovered an unresponsive adult male with a gunshot wound and he was subsequently rushed to a hospital. Tragically, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The victim has been identified as Eliot Brown, a resident of the Dumaine Street area, leaving neighbors in mourning over his loss.
Later that day, investigators arrested Enrique J. Garcia, a 26-year-old male, in connection with Brown’s murder. Garcia was apprehended in the Third District and charged with one count of second-degree murder. According to court records, Garcia has a somewhat troubled criminal history, which includes a previous arrest in January 2022 for allegedly shooting his stepfather, a case in which charges were later dropped after self-defense claims were made. At the time of his arrest for Brown’s murder, Garcia was out on a $5,000 bond for a separate burglary charge and was awaiting a pretrial conference for that case.
The NOPD is actively seeking additional information regarding these incidents and is urging anyone who may have relevant details to reach out either to Homicide Section detectives or Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans.
These violent events come amidst ongoing concerns about crime rates in New Orleans. As police work tirelessly to uncover details and manage current investigations, the community continues to grapple with the impacts of violence that disrupt local neighborhoods. The recent spike in activity has added to the urgency for public safety awareness and collaboration between law enforcement and local residents.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help provide a safer environment for everyone. With ongoing investigations into these homicides and shootings, the NOPD is emphasizing the importance of a community partnership in addressing and reducing crime.
