An 80-year-old man and a 77-year-old woman were killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Clearview Parkway in Metairie on Monday morning. The victims, identified as Oscar Carter IV from New Orleans and Martha Bradford, were involved in a collision that left others injured and is currently under investigation by the Louisiana State Police.
The crash occurred around 11 a.m. when Carter, driving a 2013 Infiniti G37, veered left from the center lane near the intersection with King Street. In the process, he struck a Nissan Altima that was also traveling north. Following the initial collision, Carter’s vehicle swerved onto the median and collided with a nearby tree.
Simultaneously, the Nissan Altima, after being struck, crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a 2020 Buick Encore heading southbound. As a result of the accident, neither Carter nor Bradford was wearing seatbelts properly and both suffered serious injuries. Carter died at the scene, while Bradford was transported to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Another passenger in the Infiniti, who was wearing a seatbelt, experienced minor injuries and was also treated at a local hospital. The occupants of the Nissan and the Buick reportedly sustained minor injuries as well, with all being taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Authorities have indicated that impairment is not suspected in this incident; however, they have collected toxicology samples for routine analysis as part of their investigation. The cause of the crash and contributing factors are still under review by the Louisiana State Police, who are working to gather more information about the circumstances leading up to the collision.
Multi-vehicle accidents like this are a significant concern for road safety, specifically among older drivers. National statistics show that older adults can face increased risks on the road due to a variety of factors including slower reflexes and declining health conditions. The Louisiana State Police emphasize the importance of wearing seatbelts regardless of the distance being traveled to enhance safety for all vehicle occupants.
In light of this tragic incident, it is crucial for drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols to prevent further accidents. The community of Metairie is mourning the loss of Carter and Bradford, highlighting the unforeseen consequences of roadway mishaps.
