In the upcoming fiscal year, Louisiana’s higher education institutions are set to receive over $610 million for construction, along with $75 million for research and special projects. The budget reflects financial stability across the state’s four higher education systems. Notably, LSU will receive significant funds for a new library project and other construction initiatives. Additional allocations include support for facilities at Southern and University of Louisiana systems, ensuring continued investment in education infrastructure.

Batton Rouge, Louisiana – Louisiana’s higher education institutions will receive more than $610 million for construction and an additional $75 million for research and other special projects in the upcoming fiscal year 2025-26 state budget. This significant financial support comes as the state prepares to start its budget process next week and the funding levels for the four higher education systems in Louisiana remain largely stable compared to the current year.

The budget allocations are formalized in House Bill 2, which outlines the funding for various state university systems. Among the primary beneficiaries, Louisiana State University (LSU) stands out, as a substantial amount of the budget is dedicated to the long-awaited new library project. LSU will see $33 million allocated for the initial phase of construction, which is set to commence in the summer of 2024.

Across the LSU System, total funding is projected to reach approximately $196 million next year, displaying an increase from the $186 million allocated this year. In addition to library construction, the budget allocates about $28 million for a new science building and another $28 million for renovations at the Medical Education Building Laboratory at LSU Health Sciences New Orleans.

The Southern University System is also experiencing notable growth in fund allocation, rising to around $144 million, a marked increase from last year’s $67 million. This surge includes $47 million earmarked for the construction of a new science, technology, engineering, and math complex at the Baton Rouge campus.

The University of Louisiana System is expected to receive about $175 million, an increase from $136 million. The funding includes $17 million designated for renovations of a major academic building at Louisiana Tech University and $15 million for updating the Health Science Complex at the University of Louisiana Lafayette.

The Louisiana Community and Technical College System’s funding is projected to be close to $31 million, slightly down from approximately $34 million in the previous fiscal year. A notable project includes $14 million set aside for a new building and campus development at Baton Rouge Community College.

Beyond construction funding, there are additional allocations for various research initiatives and special projects across the state’s higher education systems. LSU is set to receive $7.5 million to offset lost federal research funding during the previous fiscal year.

Within the University of Louisiana System, financial allocations have also been designated for specific projects: Grambling State University will receive $6.7 million for an athletic facility, McNeese State University is allocated $250,000 to improve its baseball and softball programs, and Nicholls State University is budgeted $500,000 for its athletic programs. Additionally, the University of Louisiana Monroe will get $2 million for its pharmacy school.

The Southern University System will see $1 million allocated for night classes at Southern University New Orleans, while Southern University Shreveport is slated to receive $295,000 for a mobile health unit.

It is important to note that funding amounts for universities can fluctuate annually based on the financial needs and phases of their respective construction projects. This year’s budget ensures continued investment in the state’s higher education infrastructure, aiming to support both construction projects and research initiatives vital for academic and institutional growth.
