Jack Rizzuto has filed a lawsuit against the Krewe of Oshun, claiming he is owed $130,000 for float construction costs related to upcoming parades. Rizzuto expresses frustration over unpaid invoices and alleges management issues within the Krewe. The Krewe’s captain disputes the claims and asserts all payments have been settled. As legal disputes complicate the situation, the Krewe continues preparations for future events, with Rizzuto seeking permit revocation amidst the tensions.
St. Charles Parish – Float builder Jack Rizzuto has initiated a lawsuit against the Krewe of Oshun, claiming that he is owed $130,000 for float construction costs associated with the Krewe’s upcoming parades. Rizzuto asserts that this amount includes payments for work related to the 2025 parade as well as two additional parades he was contracted to build.
The lawsuit, filed in St. Charles Parish where Rizzuto operates his float-building business and where their contract was signed in 2022, reflects ongoing tensions related to financial obligations and management within the Krewe. Rizzuto has expressed frustration over the situation, noting that he provided floats without receiving full upfront payment, which he regretfully labeled as a sign of his generosity.
Rizzuto initially sought $50,000 in June for the 2025 parade; however, the lawsuit now cites a total of $130,000 in owed payments. This increase comes amidst claims that the Krewe has failed to settle payments with vendors, raising concerns about potential violations of business ordinances.
In a rebuttal, Gian Durand, the current captain of the Krewe and a former queen of the ALLA parade, disputes Rizzuto’s allegations. Durand maintains that the Krewe does not owe Rizzuto any outstanding money and asserts that they possess receipts demonstrating that all payments were made. Furthermore, Durand challenges the jurisdiction of the lawsuit, arguing that any disputes regarding obligations should be resolved in Orleans Parish, not St. Charles.
The Krewe of Oshun has taken proactive measures regarding future parades, having engaged another float builder to prepare for their 2026 event, scheduled for February 6. This decision may further complicate Rizzuto’s claims and his ability to fulfill the contractual obligations he believes he is owed.
The legal issues have intensified with a recent judge’s ruling temporarily preventing Rizzuto from acting as captain of the Krewe. This has elevated the ongoing leadership dispute within the organization, prompting plans by Durand to reinforce original leadership that includes Dominique Thomas, a member of the founding family.
Adding to the complications, Rizzuto’s son, who also serves as his attorney, has sent a letter to the New Orleans City Council requesting that the Krewe’s parade permit be revoked. This maneuver is viewed by Durand as an attempt at a power grab, as Rizzuto argues that the Krewe missed a crucial payment deadline that would nullify their prior agreements.
The growing conflict highlights significant management challenges within the Krewe of Oshun as they navigate their financial commitments and leadership structure. As the parades approach, both parties remain at odds over the implications of the lawsuit and the status of future events.
With the 2026 parade drawing near, the outcome of this legal dispute could have lasting effects on the Krewe’s operations and its ability to deliver a successful parade experience for participants and attendees alike.
