The investigation was prompted by a complaint to the Louisiana Department of Insurance from a trucking company that suspected fraudulent activity. This investigation commenced on March 25, 2025, and unveiled a scenario wherein the individuals involved allegedly conspired to fabricate the conditions of the crash, seeking financial gain through false insurance claims.

The three arrested suspects have been identified as 45-year-old Justin Ledet from Rayne, 38-year-old Steven Thomas of Lafayette, and 37-year-old Alfred Onezine from Breaux Bridge. Reports indicate that Justin Ledet was operating a company-owned truck when he allegedly collided with the rear of a Chevrolet Silverado, which was driven by Steven Thomas. At the time of the incident, Thomas was accompanied by Onezine and three juvenile passengers.

Following the accident, all five occupants of the Silverado proceeded to file insurance claims against the trucking company, with total potential fraudulent claims amounting to nearly $10 million. On May 2, both Ledet and Thomas were apprehended by law enforcement for violations of Louisiana’s automobile insurance fraud statute (LA R.S. 22:1925). They were booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center without incident. Subsequently, on May 29, Alfred Onezine was arrested on a warrant that included charges of three counts of cruelty to juveniles (LA R.S. 14:93) and four counts of automobile insurance fraud. Onezine also faced charges of resisting an officer (LA R.S. 14:108) after reportedly resisting arrest. He was booked into the St. Martin Parish Jail.
