Law enforcement intensifies efforts to recapture escaped inmates Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey.
The FBI and Crime Stoppers have raised the reward to $50,000 for information on escaped inmates Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey. Both men, considered armed and dangerous, escaped from the Orleans Justice Center three weeks ago after breaching their cell. The escape has raised concerns over security measures at the facility, which were inadequate at the time of the escape. Authorities are urging the public for information while increasing search efforts and making arrests related to the fugitives.
New Orleans – The FBI and Crime Stoppers have announced an increased reward of $50,000 for information leading to the capture of escaped inmates Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey. Each fugitive has a reward of $20,000, with an additional $10,000 contributed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The two men escaped from the Orleans Justice Center on May 16 and have been on the run for nearly three weeks as of Thursday.
Authorities have classified both escapees as armed and dangerous. Derrick Groves, a convicted killer, is facing sentencing in July. Antoine Massey has a documented history of escaping custody multiple times, alongside previous charges related to domestic abuse and other offenses. Law enforcement officials are urging the public to report any information that can assist in their recapture.
The escape occurred when the inmates removed a toilet and breached a wall in their cell. It initially went unnoticed for hours, attributed to inadequate staffing and security measures at the facility, where supervising personnel were reportedly at only 60% capacity. On the day of the escape, supervisors were responsible for monitoring 1,400 inmates.
In a concerted effort to locate the escapees, law enforcement agencies are intensifying their search efforts, which include collaborations between the FBI, U.S. Marshals, and local police departments. Surveillance cameras at the Orleans Justice Center were found to be non-operational during the jailbreak, raising concerns about the facility’s security measures and maintenance failures.
In addition to the escapees, authorities have arrested 14 individuals suspected of aiding Groves and Massey, including family and associates. This situation has prompted scrutiny over the security of the jail, with many calling attention to long-standing dysfunctions within the New Orleans correctional system. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson has acknowledged the need for accountability and improvements in the unit’s infrastructure.
Following the escape, flooding issues reported at the facility have also drawn concern from the community. Louisana’s Attorney General expressed confidence that the remaining fugitives will be captured soon. Further investigations into the circumstances of the jailbreak will continue, as officials assess the conditions that allowed such an incident to occur.
As the search for the escapees continues, a joint press conference is scheduled to update the public and the media on the latest developments surrounding the manhunt and the law enforcement efforts. The overarching goal remains to ensure the swift recapture of Groves and Massey, safeguarding the community from potential harm.
