New Orleans – The I-10 Westbound highways faced significant disruption Saturday morning due to two related multi-vehicle crashes near the Highrise Bridge. The incidents affected a total of eleven vehicles and led to the complete blockage of all westbound lanes in the area, creating extensive traffic delays.

The first accident occurred in the left lane at approximately 6:58 a.m. local time, prompting a secondary crash just minutes later at 7:09 a.m. As a result, all westbound lanes near the Highrise Bridge, particularly close to Louisa Street, were temporarily closed. As of around 9 a.m., emergency crews were actively engaged in the removal of damaged vehicles and debris from the roadway.

Due to the severity of the situation, I-10 West was closed at Chef Menteur Highway with traffic being diverted to the Louisa Street exit. According to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), significant delays and heavy congestion were reported throughout the area as midmorning approached.

Three individuals were transported to University Medical Center by New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for injuries sustained during the crashes. Both the New Orleans Fire Rescue and local police units responded promptly to the scene, ensuring that all necessary assistance was rendered.

The involvement of a tractor trailer in one of the accidents necessitated calling for tow crews to assist with the recovery of vehicles. Although no initial estimated time for reopening the interstate was provided, it has since cleared, allowing traffic to resume.

The traffic backups extended from the Highrise Bridge to the Morrison Road exit, leading to severe strain on the surrounding roadways. Motorists were urged to exercise caution and consider alternative routes due to the significant congestion caused by the accidents and ongoing icy conditions in the region from a recent blizzard.

In light of these challenges and the risk posed to drivers during inclement weather, officials are strongly advising individuals to avoid travel when possible and to stay updated on road conditions and traffic advisories.

This latest incident highlights the critical need for motorists to remain vigilant and prioritize safety when navigating roadways, especially during hazardous weather events. As the community continues to recover from the chaos on I-10, the cooperation of all drivers is essential to ensure smoother travel on the state’s highways.
