Baton Rouge, Louisiana – A tragic incident at Southern University has resulted in the death of a 20-year-old mechanical engineering student, Caleb Wilson, following injuries sustained during a hazing ritual. The incident has led Wilson’s family to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, its local chapters, and the university.

Wilson, who was also a member of the university’s Human Jukebox marching band, died in a hospital hours after being injured during a hazing event on February 26. His family’s lawsuit, filed in the 19th Judicial District Court in East Baton Rouge Parish, seeks accountability for the actions that led to his untimely death. The defendants named in the lawsuit include Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., its Beta Sigma and Lambda Alpha chapters, the Board of Supervisors of Southern University and A&M College, along with several individuals involved in the events leading up to Wilson’s death.

According to the lawsuit, during the hazing ritual, pledges including Wilson were instructed to wear gray sweatsuits as part of the “pledge attire.” The pledges were then lined up, and fraternity members, while wearing boxing gloves, punched them in the chest four times each. Following this, Wilson collapsed and had a seizure, ultimately becoming unresponsive.

Instead of calling 911, fraternity members attempted to conceal the incident by moving Wilson to another room, changing his clothes, and taking him to the hospital themselves. At the hospital, these members falsely asserted that Wilson had collapsed while playing basketball. However, the East Baton Rouge Coroner later ruled his death a homicide resulting from commotio cordis, a type of blunt force trauma to the chest.

In connection with this incident, three fraternity members have been arrested and face charges that include manslaughter and criminal hazing. The lawsuit further claims that Omega Psi Phi Fraternity has a prior history of hazing incidents and that the university has failed to adequately protect its students from such dangerous practices.

In response to the incident and the ensuing controversy, Southern University expelled the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi and has issued a ban on new member intakes for all Greek organizations on campus. The university is now facing scrutiny regarding its approaches to hazing prevention and student safety policies.

Wilson’s family has emphasized that their lawsuit is not focused on financial compensation; rather, it aims to hold all parties accountable and to put an end to the culture of hazing that persists in some Greek organizations. The family expressed devastation over their loss, underlining the necessity for systemic change to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

This incident has sparked a renewed discussion about hazing practices across colleges and universities nationwide. Advocates against hazing are calling for stricter enforcement of anti-hazing laws and more comprehensive educational programs aimed at preventing such dangerous rituals. The tragic fate of Caleb Wilson serves as a grim reminder of the potential consequences associated with these longstanding traditions within some fraternities and sororities.
