News Summary

ENFRA, based in Metairie, Louisiana, announces its acquisition of River Mechanical Services, allowing it to expand into the Northeast U.S. This move aligns with ENFRA’s strategy to enhance its footprint and service offerings, particularly in the HVAC and energy sectors. With River Mechanical Services specializing in HVAC systems and plumbing, the acquisition supports ENFRA’s growth in critical markets driven by their Energy as a Service model. The company aims to solidify its position as a leader in this sector by leveraging innovative technologies.

Metairie, Louisiana – On June 2, Metairie-based ENFRA announced its acquisition of Philadelphia’s River Mechanical Services, marking a significant expansion into the Northeast region of the United States. This acquisition aligns with ENFRA’s objective to broaden its national footprint and establish a presence in another major urban market.

River Mechanical Services, founded in 1997, specializes in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, plumbing repair, installation, and maintenance. The company serves a diverse customer base across sectors including commercial real estate, health care, higher education, and hospitality.

ENFRA, formerly known as Bernhard, operates 25 offices nationwide and employs approximately 2,400 individuals. The firm provides comprehensive engineering, construction, maintenance, and asset management services, primarily catering to the health care, higher education, and information technology sectors. This acquisition is set to enhance ENFRA’s capabilities and service offerings in these critical areas.

Philip Catanzaro, chief operating officer of ENFRA, emphasized that the acquisition of River Mechanical Services allows the firm to enter a strategically important market in the Northeast, further solidifying its status as a leader in the EaaS (Energy as a Service) sector.

ENFRA has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1919 by William Bernhard in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as Bernhard Plumbing and Sheet Metal Works. The company underwent a significant transformation in 2013 when it was acquired by Bernhard Capital Partners, led by Jim Bernhard, and merged with other firms. This merger resulted in the creation of a powerful energy services entity, ultimately leading to a rebranding as ENFRA in May 2025, highlighting its focus on the evolving Energy as a Service market.

The Energy as a Service model allows customers to utilize energy infrastructure without the burden of ownership, opting instead for a recurring fee arrangement with third-party providers. This innovative approach caters to a growing demand for efficient and sustainable energy solutions.

With an estimated revenue exceeding $790 million anticipated for 2024, ENFRA is well-positioned in the EaaS market, which Grandview Research values at approximately $25 billion in the United States. The company boasts long-term contracts with various prominent institutions, including Tulane University, LSU, the Jefferson Parish government, the University of Arkansas, LCMC Health, Ochsner Health, and the University of New Orleans.

Rob Guthrie, serving as ENFRA’s CEO since 2024, has played a crucial role in driving the company’s rapid evolution into a leader within the Energy as a Service sector. As the firm navigates this growth, it faces challenges such as potential changes to tax credits for renewable energy under the current administration. However, the emergence of technologies like artificial intelligence may provide new avenues to enhance energy efficiency across major sectors and further propel ENFRA’s growth.

In summary, the acquisition of River Mechanical Services represents a significant step for ENFRA as it expands its geographical reach and service offerings in the competitive HVAC and energy sectors. The move aims to solidify the company’s position as a leader in the rapidly evolving Energy as a Service market, while also embracing new technologies that could shape the future of energy utilization and efficiency.
