New Orleans, Louisiana, boasts a diverse and dynamic educational landscape, encompassing a range of public schools, higher education institutions, and public libraries.

Public Schools:

The city’s public education system is unique, with a significant emphasis on charter schools. As of the 2024-2025 school year, the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB), branded as NOLA Public Schools, oversees 67 of the 74 public schools in the parish. This includes one direct-run school and 65 charter schools operated by 31 non-profit Charter Management Organizations.

In terms of student demographics, approximately 43,500 students attend public schools in New Orleans. Of these, 92% are students of color, 84% are economically disadvantaged, and 13% are students with disabilities.

Colleges and Universities:

New Orleans is home to a rich array of higher education institutions, including:

• Tulane University: A private research university offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.
• University of New Orleans (UNO): A public research university providing diverse academic programs.
• Loyola University New Orleans: A private Jesuit university known for its liberal arts and professional studies.
• Xavier University of Louisiana: The only historically Black, Catholic university in the U.S., renowned for its programs in the sciences and pharmacy.
• Dillard University: A private historically Black university emphasizing a liberal arts education.
• Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO): A public historically Black university offering various undergraduate and graduate programs.

In total, the city hosts 10 colleges and universities, including two medical schools and a top-rated pharmacy school.

Public Libraries:

The New Orleans Public Library system operates multiple branches throughout the city, offering resources, programs, and services to the community. The main library is located at 219 Loyola Avenue.
