NEW ORLEANS – It’s with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of David Blake, a familiar and cherished voice in the community. David, who devoted a remarkable 30 years as a morning news anchor at WWL, died over the weekend at the age of 71 due to complications from heart failure.
David Blake was more than just a news anchor; he was a friend to countless listeners who tuned in every morning. His family recently announced his passing through an obituary, marking the end of an era for many who grew up listening to his engaging news stories and insights.
David kicked off his broadcasting career way back in the 1970s. Starting at WABB-AM in Mobile, Alabama, he quickly made a name for himself alongside morning host Ron Frazier. This was just the beginning, as David expanded his horizons and later became the morning news anchor and sidekick to ‘Cajun’ Ken Cooper at WEZB 97 FM in New Orleans.
After making significant contributions to the radio landscape in the Crescent City, he decided to head back to Southern California. There, he took on the role of news director at KFI AM 640 in Los Angeles, where he rubbed shoulders with some legendary figures like Gary Owens and the iconic comedy duo Lohman and Barkley. His knack for storytelling soon landed him a spot anchoring morning news at WLMG FM Magic 101.9, before he ultimately returned to his roots at WWL Radio.
Over his impressive 45-year career, David covered a variety of topics, from local happenings to national and world headlines. Alongside morning show hosts like Bob DelGiorno and later Tommy Tucker, he brought trust and credibility to the airwaves, helping inform countless listeners about the events shaping their lives.

He is survived by his wife, Heather, his daughter Allison Blake Williams, his son John Paul Blake, and his in-laws, Paul and Mary Grace Cutting.
