Compton III Shines Bright at Jazz Fest in New Orleans!

This year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is buzzing with energy, and the spotlight has turned onto an impressive newcomer: local artist Compton III! Nestled lovingly at his booth near the Congo Square Stage, he has captured the hearts of festival-goers with a dazzling collection of sculptures and art toys. April 25, 2025, marks not just a special day for the festival but an incredible milestone for this gifted artist showcasing his work for the very first time.

A Must-See Exhibit!

The excitement around Compton III’s booth is hard to ignore. It’s being hailed as a must-see exhibit not only at Jazz Fest but potentially in the entire city of New Orleans! Patrons are flocking to his space to take a look at the playful plastic figurines, which are deeply inspired by the rich Crescent City culture. Attendees are delighted by the charming designs that evoke nostalgia and joy, bridging the gap between playful artistry and cultural heritage.

Meet Z’Bo and His Colorful Friends

One standout character catching everyone’s eye is the vibrant Z’Bo. Designed as a Zulu parade rider, this figure sports a billowing afro wig and oversized beads, perfectly embodying the spirit of festivities. Z’Bo first made its debut in the 2024 Louisiana Contemporary group show at the prominent Ogden Museum of Southern Art and has since become a symbol of the community’s joy and flair.

From Biology to Bold Creations

Compton III’s journey into the art world is as unique as his creations. Growing up in New Orleans and calling the Ninth Ward and the West Bank his home, he attended Edna Karr High School before moving on to earn a degree in biology from Southeastern Louisiana University. Although he did not receive formal training in art, his skills honed through a dental program—learning to craft precise molds and castings—are now transformed into vibrant sculptures that speak to the soul.

Diving Deep into Cultural Heritage

Compton III’s artwork doesn’t just flaunt colors and forms; it delves into deep-rooted themes such as the history of racial inequity tied to the Mardi Gras Indian tradition. One of his latest characters, Spy Boy, echoes respect for his grandfather, Bro Leonard, who proudly masked as a Mardi Gras Indian during the 1960s and 1970s. Spy Boy boasts a fully feathered design and showcases Compton III’s dedication and love for his family’s legacy.

A Towering Tribute

Festival visitors will be amazed to spot a colossal 16-foot-tall, inflatable Spy Boy crowning the Durio’s House of Style barber shop on Gentilly Blvd. This impressive installation was originally created for a temporary display atop the Barnett Hotel and has since become an iconic sight, reflecting the creativity flowing through Compton III’s veins.

Art for Everyone!

Compton III’s art pieces cater to everyone—character sculptures are priced from $400, while unique pieces dedicated to his grandfather are available for $20,000. Plus, for those looking to take home a piece of the festival spirit without breaking the bank, small pins of his designs can be purchased for just $15 at his Congo Square booth.

A Bright Future Ahead

Additionally, the artist has been inspired by the incredible Big Chief Demond Melancon of the Young Seminole Hunters, learning intricate sewing techniques for his fantastic sculptures—a testament to the collaborative spirit thriving in the New Orleans art scene. With artwork available for viewing only during the first weekend of Jazz Fest, make sure to catch Compton III’s creations while you can!

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is brimming with remarkable moments this year, and Compton III stands out as a shining star, inviting everyone to join in on the fun and enjoy the magic of art!
