New Orleans – Margaret Adair McCarthy Wood Ransone, a dedicated mother, grandmother, and community volunteer, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at the age of 97 and a half. Surrounded by her loving family, she left behind a legacy of love, kindness, and commitment to both her family and her community.
Born on December 9, 1927, in New Orleans to John McCarthy and Veronica Hennessey McCarthy, Margaret was the youngest of her siblings. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Jack, Dennis, Gail, Ann Louise, Catherine, and Justin. Known for her warm spirit, Margaret cherished her family relationships, particularly enjoying the adventures experienced by her children and the bonds among her grandchildren.
Margaret’s life took a pivotal turn when she married David J. Wood, the best friend of her brother. Their romance blossomed during World War II through letters exchanged while David served in the Navy. After the war, they married and had six children: David Jr. (deceased), Carolyn Wood Kinabrew (John), Stephanie Wood Jumonville (Robert), Greg (Kathy, deceased), Rob (Tonette), and Mary Beth Wood Wooten (Bob).
Margaret and David both graduated from Tulane University and made a significant impact as educators in their communities. David was also employed by Delta Airlines and was awarded the Navy’s highest honor, The Distinguished Flying Cross. Tragically, Margaret lost David to cancer at the young age of 58 after 35 years of marriage.
After David’s passing, Margaret found love again with John E.B. Ransone, who also faced the loss of his spouse to cancer. The couple enjoyed 20 years of companionship, supporting each other in their shared experiences of loss.
As a grandmother, Margaret became known as “Nonnie” and was actively engaged in the lives of her 12 grandchildren, which included David (predeceased), John, Christopher, Suzi, Robert, Cooper, Richard, Jenny, Conor, Ashley, Stephen, and Amanda. She celebrated the births of 24 great-grandchildren, embracing her ever-growing family with affection.
Throughout her life, Margaret was a dedicated volunteer in her community, focusing particularly on children’s advocacy. She played a key role in the Irish Cultural Society and was instrumental in the establishment of Hibernian Memorial Park, commemorating Irish immigrants. Her commitment to child safety was evident during her tenure as chairman of the Child Advocacy Committee of Women for a Better Louisiana (WBL), where she actively worked to pass legislation for child safety, including fingerprinting laws for individuals working with children.
Margaret also served on the board of the American Judicature Society (AJS), where she was respected for her insightful contributions during meetings. Over the years, she received multiple awards for her volunteer efforts, including the Angel Award and the St. Elizabeth’s Guild Volunteer Activist Award.
A passionate gardener and talented seamstress, Margaret found joy in creating aprons for family and friends, continuing to work on projects up until a week prior to her passing. In December 2024, she experienced a mild stroke which led her to accept help from caregivers, a decision she expressed gratitude for as she navigated her later years. During her final days, Margaret underwent emergency surgery which ultimately revealed aggressive cancer. She faced this news with remarkable grace and acceptance.
Margaret’s life story is marked by a profound commitment to her family and community, characterized by traits of love and kindness. In honor of her memory, donations can be made to Hibernian Memorial Park, Women for a Better Louisiana, or the Metropolitan Crime Commission.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans. Visitation will commence at 12:00 noon, followed by Mass at 2:00 PM.
