New Orleans – Chef Melissa Araujo, a prominent figure in the culinary scene and owner of Alma Cafe, was arrested on Monday on charges of government benefits fraud. The 46-year-old chef is accused of illegally receiving more than $55,000 in Medicaid and other public assistance benefits over a span of nearly three years.
Araujo’s arrest was facilitated by the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (LBI) following an anonymous tip that raised concerns regarding her income level. The tip claimed that Araujo misrepresented her earnings to qualify for Medicaid, a state program designed for low-income individuals. As part of the investigation, LBI agents reviewed Araujo’s bank statements and found that she had earned over six figures annually from January 2022 to December 2024.
During this period, Araujo allegedly deposited an impressive $3.1 million into her bank accounts through a total of 1,266 transactions linked to 13 businesses with which she is associated. These significant earnings stand in stark contrast to the claims she reportedly made to a Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) employee, stating that she had not worked since 2022. The LDH is responsible for overseeing Medicaid eligibility in Louisiana, and Araujo’s financial records suggest that she would not have qualified for Medicaid had she accurately reported her income.
From June 2020 to September 2022, Araujo’s personal accounts received over $384,000. Furthermore, she managed to purchase three properties valued at a combined total of $785,000 during this time frame. The disparity between her reported income and her bank activity raised significant questions, prompting the LBI to take action.
Araujo was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison following her arrest but has since been released on bond. If convicted, she faces a potential sentence of up to five years in prison along with a fine reaching up to $10,000.
Known for her remarkable contribution to the culinary arts, Araujo is a two-time semifinalist for the prestigious James Beard Award. Her restaurant, Alma Cafe, has earned acclaim for its modern interpretation of Honduran cuisine. Recently, she opened a second location of Alma Cafe in Mid-City and unveiled a new culinary concept called Oscar in early 2023, further solidifying her status in the food industry.
As of Thursday morning, no bond information had been made public following Araujo’s arrest, and attempts to reach her for comment were unsuccessful. Araujo’s situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in ensuring compliance with government assistance programs designed to support low-income individuals.
This investigation underscores the importance of accurate reporting in qualifying for government benefits and serves as a reminder of the legal implications that can arise from attempting to misrepresent one’s financial situation. As the case proceeds, Araujo’s professional achievements add a layer of complexity to public discussions about fraud and the integrity of assistance programs.
