New Orleans – The Celebrate Canal! Coalition held its quarterly meeting on April 30 at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, focusing on revitalization efforts for Canal Street. Over 80 community members and key stakeholders attended the meeting, which emphasized transportation, public safety, retail development, and cultural initiatives along the historic street.

Significant attendees included Michael Hecht, CEO of Greater New Orleans Inc., Councilwoman Lesli Harris, and Lona Hankins, Executive Director of the Regional Transit Authority (RTA). They came together to discuss updates on public transportation, community safety, and new art initiatives aimed at enhancing the Canal Street environment.

The RTA provided insights into its operations, serving approximately 39,000 riders daily across Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard Parishes. This service includes 28 bus routes, five streetcar lines, two ferry terminals, and paratransit options. RTA officials described Canal Street as the “pulse of New Orleans,” highlighting its role as a crucial connector for neighborhoods, commerce, and culture.

Lona Hankins presented “Reclaiming the Ride,” a new initiative promoting the reduction of private vehicle dependence through substantial investments and upgrades to the transit system. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve public transportation throughout the region.

District Attorney Jason Williams expressed support for the Coalition’s ongoing efforts to enhance public spaces and improve community safety. He underscored the importance of community prosecution in addressing crime trends and advocated for collaboration among various agencies to foster a safer environment.

In an exciting development, the Coalition announced the launch of the “Windows on Canal” art installation, set to begin on May 10 and run through July 6. This project will transform Canal Street storefronts into vibrant outdoor art galleries, featuring installations centered around Scrim, a dog from a local rescue story. This initiative is a collaboration between the Celebrate Canal! Coalition and the local arts organization Where y’Art Works.

Notable participating businesses in the “Windows on Canal” project include Palace Café, Rubensteins, Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, Canal Place, Ruby Slipper, and the Saenger Theater. Each art installation will be interactive, utilizing QR codes to link viewers to a dedicated website launching on May 5, which will explore local history and the artists involved.

To engage families, a Children’s Scavenger Hunt kickoff event is planned for May 10 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This event will feature a search for Scrim hidden in the window displays, providing free materials for participants.

In addition to the scavenger hunt, several other events associated with the “Windows on Canal” installation are scheduled, including “Taste of Canal” on May 28, an Art & Architecture Tour on June 4, and “Fashion on Canal” on June 19. These events aim to further cultivate community interest in Canal Street’s revitalization.

The Coalition is pursuing funding to support projects like “Windows on Canal” and other community-oriented events. They aim to raise $15,000 by May 6 through their GiveNOLA Day campaign, which highlights the importance of community support in sustaining these initiatives.

Established in 2024, the Celebrate Canal! Coalition is a citizen-led effort dedicated to addressing key issues on Canal Street to create a more vibrant and safe urban experience for residents and visitors alike. The ongoing collaboration between community members, local businesses, and governmental agencies signifies a positive step forward in revitalizing one of New Orleans’ most iconic streets.
