New Orleans

Antoine Massey, a 33-year-old inmate who escaped from the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility in May, has been recaptured on Friday, June 27, 2025. The recapture occurred after a month-long manhunt for Massey, who was one of ten inmates that escaped from the facility on May 16.

The Louisiana State Police announced Massey’s recapture on social media, confirming that he was found alone inside a residence on the 9400 block of Stroelitz Street in the Hollygrove neighborhood. The arrest took place around 3:30 p.m. and was conducted without incident, thanks to a tip from Crime Stoppers.

Massey is the ninth escapee to be recaptured, leaving only one other individual, Derrick Groves, still at large. Authorities have offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to Groves’ capture. Groves has a history of serious criminal charges, including second-degree murder and battery against a correctional employee.

Massey’s escape from the Orleans Justice Center was facilitated by security lapses at the facility. Investigators revealed that escapees had taken advantage of defective locks and created a hole behind a toilet to exit the facility undetected. Jail staff did not realize the escape had occurred until a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m., several hours later. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson reported that an absence of a deputy in the pod was noted, which contributed to the failure to monitor the inmates effectively.

Massey was awaiting trial for multiple charges at the time of his escape, including domestic abuse involving strangulation, motor vehicle theft, and a parole violation. This incident marks Massey’s fourth escape from police custody. His prior escapes date back to 2007, when he evaded authorities while in a juvenile detention center.

Following his recapture, Massey is set to be transported to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. Authorities consider his capture a significant achievement in the broader manhunt that involved around 200 law enforcement officers dedicated to recapturing the escaped inmates.

While on the run, Massey used social media to declare his innocence and sought assistance from public figures, revealing that he remained active online during his time as a fugitive. Additionally, a former girlfriend of Massey was arrested as a suspect for allegedly aiding him after his escape.

Law enforcement officials are continuing their efforts to locate Derrick Groves and have urged him to surrender peacefully. Investigators remain committed to closing the case of the escapees, with ongoing surveillance and tips being monitored closely to ensure Groves is apprehended.
