New Orleans – Antoine Massey, a fugitive inmate who escaped from the Orleans Parish Jail over a month ago, was apprehended on Friday afternoon in the Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans. The New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick confirmed the arrest, which was made possible due to an anonymous tip received by Sheriff Susan Hutson around 11 a.m. Massey surrendered peacefully to law enforcement around 3:30 p.m.
Massey’s capture marks him as the ninth inmate to be recaptured since the jailbreak that occurred on May 16. However, one inmate, Derrick Groves, remains at large, and authorities are offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his capture. The police have urged the community to assist in locating Groves, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation in these ongoing investigations.
At the time of his escape, Massey was facing several serious charges, including domestic abuse, motor vehicle theft, and a violation of parole. He was specifically held on charges related to domestic abuse battery that involved strangulation, raising concerns over the potential risks he posed while on the run. In addition to his previous charges, St. Tammany Parish officials have issued warrants for Massey for more severe offenses, including second-degree rape and kidnapping.
Massey’s criminal history includes multiple escape attempts dating back to 2007, during which he successfully escaped from both juvenile and adult detention facilities. His latest attempted escape included cutting off an ankle monitor multiple times, with one instance occurring at a Walmart. After his capture, he was rebooked at the Orleans Parish Jail and subsequently flown to the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, where he will face legal proceedings for his previous charges and potentially more for his role in the jailbreak.
In June, while still on the run, Massey made headlines by resurfacing on social media, posting videos in which he claimed his innocence and sought help from well-known public figures. Law enforcement authorities, believing he had access to some network of support, executed a raid on a residence tied to Massey. They uncovered several items thought to belong to him, further substantiating the investigation around his escape.
