Police successfully captured Antoine Massey after a lengthy manhunt.
Antoine Massey, who escaped from the Orleans Justice Center six weeks ago, has been captured in New Orleans. His arrest followed a police operation triggered by a tip-off. Authorities suggest Massey may have received assistance during his time as a fugitive, prompting investigations into how he managed to evade capture. Massey faces serious charges, including second-degree rape and kidnapping, in addition to recent escape-related charges. The community remains on alert as the search for another associated inmate continues.
New Orleans – After a dramatic six weeks on the run, Antoine Massey, a 33-year-old man who escaped from the Orleans Justice Center on May 16, has been captured. His arrest occurred on June 27, 2025, at a residence identified as an Airbnb in the Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans. U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that Massey was taken into custody without incident following a police operation that surrounded the location.
The recapture of Massey was made possible due to a tip received by Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson, which led law enforcement to his hiding place. New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick noted that Massey surrendered peacefully to authorities during the operation.
During his time as a fugitive, there is evidence suggesting that Massey may have received assistance from others. Louisiana State Police Superintendent Col. Robert Hodges indicated that it is likely Massey was not entirely alone in evading capture. Earlier in the month, authorities were compelled to investigate a video that surfaced, which depicted Massey making a plea for help directed at various rappers, as well as former President Trump.
Massey had been serving time for serious criminal offenses, including domestic abuse battery involving strangulation, motor vehicle theft, and a parole violation prior to his escape. When he broke out, he was also facing additional charges from St. Tammany Parish, which included second-degree rape and second-degree kidnapping. He was part of a larger incident involving a total of ten inmates who escaped from the facility; as of now, nine of those inmates have been recaptured, while one, named Derrick Groves, remains at large. Groves has a history of violence, having been previously convicted of two counts of second-degree murder linked to a Mardi Gras Day shooting in 2018.
In response to the escape and ongoing investigations, authorities have increased the reward for information leading to the capture of both Massey and Groves to $50,000. The management of the Orleans Parish Jail, overseen by Sheriff Hutson, has faced significant scrutiny and criticism due to alleged deficiencies in jail infrastructure, which may have contributed to the escape. Furthermore, multiple individuals, including a maintenance worker at the jail, have been arrested for allegedly aiding the escapees.
Following his recapture, Massey is set to be transported to a secure state correctional facility outside of the area. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has announced that Massey will face additional charges related to his escape, reflecting the seriousness of this incident and its impact on community safety.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges within the criminal justice system, particularly concerning the security of incarceration facilities and the processes in place to manage inmates. The response from law enforcement agencies demonstrates a coordinated effort to uphold public safety and hold individuals accountable for their actions.
As the investigation into Massey’s escape continues and with the search for Groves ongoing, the community remains vigilant in the face of crime and the need for effective management within the jail system.
