New Orleans, LA – Amy Green Ward, a lifelong advocate for social justice and a devoted family matriarch, passed away peacefully at the age of 99, surrounded by her loved ones. Her passing occurred quietly in her sleep, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and love that spanned nearly a century.
Born in 1926 in the Carrolton area of New Orleans to Charles J. and Josie H. Green, Amy was an only child who attended Lafayette School and graduated from Eleanor McMain High School in 1943. She met her husband Truman Ward on a blind date while he was studying at Tulane University, and they married in 1945. The couple moved to Lakeview in 1951, where they built one of the first homes in the subdivision, raising three children together until Hurricane Katrina displaced them in 2005.
Amy and Truman were founding members of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and actively participated in the United Methodist Women organization at local, district, national, and global levels. Her commitment to social and racial equality is reflected in her participation in local rallies advocating for integration and civil rights. Throughout her life, Amy delivered speeches at various international symposia, where she promoted messages of hope, grace, and love for all humanity.
In addition to her religious and social activism, Amy served on the Board of Global Ministries in New York City and was a board member for St. Mark’s Community Center for 18 years. For her outstanding community service, she received a key to the City of New Orleans. Amy’s passions extended beyond activism; she and Truman enjoyed traveling, entertaining guests, gardening, and staying active together during their 71-year marriage.
After losing her husband, Truman Ward, Amy remained determined to embrace life. At the age of 96, she moved to Sunrise Senior Living, where she spent her final years. During her time in Gonzales, LA, following Hurricane Katrina, she ventured into technology, learning about computers and digital communication. Amy penned her life experiences in her memoir titled “Amy’s Life and Times,” sharing insights and reflections from her remarkable journey.
Amy is survived by three children: Gary L. Ward (Cindy), Dr. Kenneth J. Ward (Leslie), and Sharon Ward Hagan (John). She also leaves behind five grandchildren: Geoffrey (Olivia), Blayne, Colin, Dr. Timothy Hagan, and Dr. Kristen Hagan (Thomas Leahy), along with three great-grandchildren: Liam, Truman, and August.
A memorial service honoring Amy Green Ward will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans. Visitation is scheduled from 12 PM to 2 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in New Orleans in memory of Amy’s lifelong commitment to serving her community and advocating for social justice.
