NEW ORLEANS, La. — Zombies will take over the front of New Orleans City Hall again this week. The free Thriller Halloween flash mob, now in its 15th year, starts at noon Friday, Oct. 30, with students, dance studios and neighbors performing the moves from the Michael Jackson classic.
Anyone who wants to join in still has a chance to learn the routine. One more free practice, open to every age and skill level, runs Wednesday evening, Oct. 28, starting at 6:30 at the Treme Recreation Center and ending at 8.
The tradition is led by choreographer Kenneth Kynt Bryan, whose company, Flash Mob New Orleans, grew the event from a small grassroots project into a citywide Halloween gathering. Bryan also runs Mess Arts, a nonprofit that offers arts classes and scholarships for young people.
Students from Haynes Academy, KIPP Morial, Homer Plessy, Bethune and The Willow School are among this year’s performers, along with dancers from Spotlight Dance and Mess Arts. Anne Burr Dance Studio is a sponsor, and the city recreation commission, NORDC, and FIT NOLA are partners.
Weekly practice sessions have been running since early September at the Anne Burr studio on Dublin Street. The Saturday afternoon classes start at 2 and last 90 minutes, cost $100 for the series or $20 a class, and can also be streamed online. That series wraps up on Halloween.
Earlier versions of the show have drawn dozens of costumed dancers and hundreds of onlookers, and the price of the workshop series has crept up from $90 in years past. Watching the Friday show outside City Hall costs nothing, and everyone is welcome.
