New Orleans – Dorian M. Bennett, a renowned figure in the New Orleans real estate market and a prominent patron of the arts, passed away on August 9, 2025, at the age of 75. His death marks the eighth anniversary of his wife Micaela “Kell” Kelly Bennett’s passing.
Bennett had been battling glioblastoma, a severe form of brain cancer, for 21 years, having been diagnosed in 2004. Initially given a prognosis of just three months to live, he remarkably outlived that expectation by over two decades, showcasing his resilience and strength throughout his extended illness.
Born in Hammond, Louisiana, Bennett spent more than 50 years living in New Orleans. He grounded his education in the arts and history, studying Fine Arts and Russian History at both Tulane University and the College of William & Mary. He was classically trained in piano and dedicated himself to painting and pottery, reflecting his passion for creativity.
As the founder and owner of Dorian M. Bennett Sotheby’s International Realty, he became known as the “Real Estate Agent to the Stars” due to his impressive portfolio of high-profile clients. His clientele included notable celebrities such as Lenny Kravitz, Helen Mirren, and Jimmy Buffett, among others. Though primarily focused on residential properties, Bennett was instrumental in commercial real estate deals, securing the property on Decatur Street that houses the House of Blues. His achievements in real estate were recognized with a restoration award for the successful renovation of his office located in Marigny.
For over 30 years, Bennett resided in a historic residence on Bourbon Street, a structure dating back to 1825, further cementing his connection to the cultural roots of New Orleans.
Bennett’s contributions to the community extended far beyond real estate. He was actively involved in various civic and cultural organizations, serving on the boards of prominent institutions such as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, the New Orleans Opera, and the Newcomb Art Museum. In addition to his real estate work, he produced a feature film that won a jury prize at the New Orleans Film Festival, demonstrating his diverse talents and commitment to the arts.
He is survived by his daughter, Delia Caroline Kelly Bennett, along with a large extended family. His passing follows the loss of his wife, as well as his sister and parents, reflecting the intimate tragedies he faced throughout his life. In his later years, Bennett expressed deep gratitude for the support he received from family, friends, and neighbors, which played a crucial role in his life during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, Bennett’s family has suggested that donations be made to art foundations in his honor, ensuring his legacy as a supporter of the arts continues to impact the community.
Funeral services are scheduled to be held at the Basilica of St. Stephen on August 23rd, with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. The service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will take place at Metairie Cemetery on August 25th at 10:00 a.m., where he will be laid to rest.
