Police capturing a fugitive near New Orleans jail

News Summary

Antoine Massey, a 33-year-old fugitive, was apprehended by Louisiana authorities after escaping from a New Orleans jail. His capture, nearly six weeks later, is part of a high-profile jailbreak involving multiple inmates. Authorities believe he received assistance while on the run. Following his arrest, Massey faces more charges related to his escape. The incident has highlighted security lapses at the Orleans Justice Center, where ten inmates managed to escape earlier. Meanwhile, law enforcement is still searching for the last escaped inmate, Derrick Groves.

New Orleans – Louisiana authorities captured Antoine Massey, a 33-year-old fugitive, on June 30, 2025, nearly six weeks after he escaped from a New Orleans jail. Massey was apprehended at a residence approximately two miles from the Orleans Justice Center jail, marking a significant development in a high-profile escape case involving multiple inmates.

The New Orleans Police Department reported that Massey surrendered peacefully when approached by law enforcement. His capture followed a tip received early on the morning of June 30, which led authorities to his location. Law enforcement agencies quickly coordinated, enabling the apprehension of Massey by the afternoon.

Officials from various law enforcement agencies underscored that Massey likely received assistance during his time on the run, as remaining a fugitive for such an extended period would have been difficult without support. During his escape, Massey had engaged with social media, posting videos that included identifying information, which raised the stakes for his capture. Earlier attempts to locate him included a police raid at a suspected hideout, which occurred earlier this month, but ended without finding him at that time.

Massey’s jailbreak was part of a larger incident that occurred on May 16, when ten inmates escaped from the Orleans Justice Center in what is considered one of the largest jailbreaks in recent U.S. history. Authorities revealed that Massey had managed to pull open a defective cell door, crawl through an opening behind a toilet, and scale a barbed-wire fence undetected. Graffiti discovered around the escape site showcased taunts and made light of the jailbreak, with some inscriptions humorously leading to the escape hole.

In the aftermath of this escape, several security lapses were uncovered at the jail, indicating potential complicity in the escape plan. One maintenance worker was apprehended and charged with aiding the detainees by disabling the water supply to the toilet, which was crucial for their escape. Following the escape, police have successfully tracked down eight of the other nine escapees, while Derrick Groves remains at large. There is a standing reward of $50,000 for information that would lead to Groves’ capture.

Massey had been held on severe charges, which included rape, kidnapping, domestic violence, and a violation of a protective order in St. Tammany Parish. Additionally, he faced charges in Orleans Parish for motor vehicle theft and domestic battery. Following his capture, authorities indicated that he will face additional charges due to his escape.

Further complicating Massey’s case, a woman connected to him, reportedly in an on-again-off-again relationship, was arrested. She faces charges of obstruction of justice and acting as a principal in the aggravated escape. Law enforcement agencies remain vigilant in their efforts to conclude this case, with a renewed focus on capturing the final fugitive, Derrick Groves.

Law enforcement officials, including the Louisiana Attorney General, have emphasized the importance of community assistance in these efforts, highlighting their commitment to public safety and law enforcement’s dedication in pursuing all individuals involved in this significant jailbreak.
