Police officers conducting a manhunt outside a New Orleans jail

News Summary

Antoine Massey, a fugitive from the Orleans Justice Center jailbreak, has been captured in the Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans. His arrest was carried out by the U.S. Marshals, marking a key moment in the ongoing investigation. The mass breakout, involving ten inmates, revealed serious security flaws at the facility. Only one escapee, Derrick Groves, remains at large, with a $50,000 reward for information leading to his capture. The incident has raised critical concerns regarding jail management and public safety in New Orleans.

New Orleans – Antoine Massey, one of two remaining escapees from the May 16 Orleans Justice Center jailbreak, was captured on June 27 in New Orleans’ Hollygrove neighborhood. His arrest was confirmed by law enforcement sources and was executed without incident by the U.S. Marshals along with local and federal agencies. Massey’s capture marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the escape incident.

The jailbreak, which involved a mass breakout of ten inmates, was characterized by a series of failures in the Orleans Justice Center’s security protocols. Massey, during his escape, managed to remove a toilet from his cell wall and crawl through the plumbing chase, successfully escaping from the facility. At the time of his escape, he was serving time for serious offenses including domestic abuse battery involving strangulation, theft of a motor vehicle, and multiple parole violations.

Massey had previously made a desperate social media plea via Instagram, soliciting support in proving his innocence, notably calling out celebrities such as Lil Wayne and Donald Trump. Information leading to his capture came from a tip to CrimeStoppers, marking a crucial development in the manhunt. In total, more than a dozen individuals have been arrested on suspicion of aiding the escapees, indicating a broader issue of complicity surrounding this incident.

As of now, only one escapee, Derrick Groves, remains at large. Groves is a four-time convicted felon, notably convicted for a double homicide in 2018, and authorities regard him as armed and dangerous. A reward of $50,000 is being offered for information that could lead to his capture. Law enforcement is on high alert as Groves’ criminal history raises concerns about public safety.

The escape raised serious questions regarding the operational standards at the Orleans Justice Center, especially during a time of staffing shortages, with the facility reportedly operating at just 60% capacity. This low staffing level contributed to inadequate monitoring of inmates, which was further compounded by reported issues such as faulty locks and distracted employees. The jailbreak incident is considered one of the largest in recent history for New Orleans, highlighting critical flaws in jail management.

In light of the escape and subsequent fallout, Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson has temporarily suspended her re-election campaign, facing considerable criticism regarding the handling of the jailbreak. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill stated that Antoine Massey will face additional charges related to his escape, further complicating his legal situations.

Additionally, law enforcement arrested Darriana Burton, believed to be Groves’ girlfriend, on charges pertaining to the assistance of his escape. Authorities have issued warnings that individuals who assist Groves may face criminal charges, urging the public to report any information related to his whereabouts promptly.

This ongoing situation not only underscores the need for immediate and effective reforms within the Orleans Justice Center but also reflects broader issues concerning inmate management and public safety in correctional facilities. With Massey now in custody and efforts intensifying to capture Derrick Groves, law enforcement remains vigilant as the community seeks resolution to this alarming situation.
