New Orleans – Antoine Massey, a 33-year-old jail escapee from New Orleans, was apprehended on June 27, 2025, after six weeks on the run following a dramatic jailbreak on May 16. He was captured peacefully at a rental home located in the 9400 block of Stroelitz Street in the Hollygrove neighborhood after law enforcement officials surrounded the area.
The arrest came after an anonymous tip was received by Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson around 11 a.m. on the day of Massey’s capture. Authorities acted swiftly on this information, leading to his apprehension without incident.
Massey, who will be held without bond, faces an additional charge of aggravated escape. He was previously in custody due to a criminal history that includes charges of parole violation, motor vehicle theft, and domestic abuse battery involving strangulation from an incident in November 2024. Prior to his escape, he had successfully evaded custody on four occasions, including incidents in which he broke an ankle monitor.
Following his arrest, Massey was transported to the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola to face legal proceedings. He appeared before a magistrate judge via Zoom the day after his capture.
At the time of his escape, Massey was one of ten inmates who broke free from the Orleans Justice Center, which garnered national attention. Among the other escapees, only Derrick “Woo” Groves, a 27-year-old convicted murderer, remains at large. Groves has a notorious history of violence, accused of four murders within an 18-month period, and has been convicted of two counts of second-degree murder alongside attempted second-degree murder.
The case of Derrick Groves is particularly infamous, as he is linked to the murder of his mother, Kim Groves, by a former New Orleans police officer, Len Davis. Authorities have intensified efforts to locate him, categorizing Groves as armed and dangerous, while urging him to surrender to the police.
In addition to Groves, Darriana Burton, 28, Groves’ girlfriend and a former employee of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, has been arrested for allegedly helping him escape. This incident has drawn criticism towards Sheriff Hutson from the City Council of New Orleans, which has sought greater oversight of the jail’s finances.
Out of the ten inmates that escaped, nine have been recaptured, alongside more than a dozen accused accomplices. Eight of the escapees were apprehended within days following the jailbreak, while others have been captured in locations including Texas. The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office is currently undertaking efforts to enhance the safety and security protocols within the jail to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges within the criminal justice system in New Orleans, drawing attention to issues related to inmate management and the effectiveness of security measures at correctional facilities.
