Law enforcement agents collaborating during a prison recapture operation in New Orleans

News Summary

Antoine Massey, a 33-year-old inmate, was apprehended after evading capture for six weeks following a dramatic escape from Orleans Justice Center. His escape, which involved manipulating prison infrastructure, is described as one of the worst in Louisiana’s history. The collaborative efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies ultimately led to his arrest in a New Orleans neighborhood. Massey, facing serious charges, including domestic abuse and theft, is now the ninth escapee to be recaptured, as authorities continue to search for one remaining fugitive.

New Orleans – Antoine Massey, a 33-year-old inmate, was apprehended on June 27, 2025, after evading capture for six weeks following his escape from the Orleans Justice Center on May 16. The escape, described by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the worst in the state’s recent history, involved several inmates breaking free by manipulating prison infrastructure.

Massey was arrested without incident at a residence on Stroelitz Street in the Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans. Law enforcement, including the Louisiana State Police, FBI, U.S. Marshals, and local police, collaborated on the effort to recapture him. The arrest followed a tip received around 11 a.m. on the day of capture, which had been relayed by Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson.

At the time of his escape, Massey was facing multiple charges, including domestic abuse battery involving strangulation, motor vehicle theft, and a parole violation. Additional charges related to his escape may also be filed against him. He is now the ninth of ten escapees to be recaptured; only one, Derrick Groves, remains at large. Authorities have offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to Groves’ capture and are encouraging him to surrender peacefully.

The jailbreak occurred when inmates managed to unlock a faulty cell door, remove a toilet, crawl through a hole behind it, and then scale a barbed-wire fence. The absence of the inmates went unnoticed for hours until a headcount revealed that many were missing. In connection with the escape, at least 16 individuals have been arrested for allegedly assisting the escapees, including a jail maintenance worker.

Massey’s history with the law includes multiple escapes. He has previously been known to cut off ankle monitors and flee from juvenile detention facilities. His incarceration record also shows he is currently wanted for a pending case in St. Tammany Parish for kidnapping and rape, as well as for violation of a protective order when he escaped.

While on the run, Massey actively posted on social media, maintaining his innocence and even reaching out to celebrities for assistance. Following his arrest, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill expressed contentment with the outcome, emphasizing the importance of fully prosecuting Massey in light of the serious charges against him.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick commented on the successful collaboration among various law enforcement agencies in recapturing the escapees. She highlighted the importance of teamwork in ensuring the safety of the community while addressing the serious ramifications of the jailbreak.

The escape incident has raised significant concerns regarding the safety and management of correctional facilities in Louisiana. With Governor Landry’s remarks emphasizing the severity of the situation, authorities are taking further measures to prevent similar events and to ensure that all remaining escapees are apprehended promptly.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement remains on high alert for any potential sightings of Derrick Groves, urging the public to report any information they may have. The capture of Massey marks a crucial step in addressing the fallout from the jailbreak, but it also underscores ongoing challenges within the corrections system in Louisiana.
