News Summary

In Louisiana, CF Industries Holdings Inc., JERA Co. Inc., and Mitsui & Co. Ltd. have announced a $4 billion investment to build the world’s largest low-carbon ammonia production facility. The project aims to produce 1.4 million metric tons of ammonia annually, featuring sustainable practices such as a carbon dioxide dehydration unit to reduce emissions. With a targeted operational start date in 2029, this facility represents a significant step forward in green energy and collaboration for a low-carbon future.

Exciting Developments in Louisiana: A New Low-Carbon Ammonia Facility is Coming!

In the beautiful state of Louisiana, three major companies have made a groundbreaking decision that could change the landscape for low-carbon energy. CF Industries Holdings Inc., JERA Co. Inc., and Mitsui & Co. Ltd. have officially announced their final investment decision (FID) on what will soon become the world’s largest ammonia production facility. Nestled in the Blue Point Complex in Ascension Parish, this project represents a significant step towards a greener future.

What’s in Store for Louisiana?

The project boasts an impressive goal of producing a whopping 1.4 million metric tons per annum (MMtpa) of ammonia. This ambitious undertaking comes with a hefty price tag of $4 billion. Construction is set to kick off shortly, and with a targeted production start date of 2029, the excitement surrounding this facility is palpable.

Ammonia production is crucial for various industries, especially agriculture, as it is primarily used in fertilizers. The decision to use natural gas as the feedstock is significant, as it aligns with the trend toward more sustainable and efficient practices that minimize environmental impact. This facility isn’t just about keeping up with demand; it’s about creating a low-carbon future!

Aiming for Sustainable Practices

But that’s not all! This new facility will take a major step toward sustainability with the addition of a carbon dioxide dehydration and compression unit. The aim? To prevent over 95% of emissions from escaping into the atmosphere. That’s right! This project isn’t just about producing ammonia; it’s also about caring for our planet.

The joint venture comprises CF Industries holding 40%, JERA 35%, and Mitsui 25%. It’s worth noting that JERA does have a conditional option to reduce its ownership percentage, giving it a level of flexibility until the end of 2025. CF Industries will take charge of the operation and maintenance, ensuring that everything runs smoothly from start to finish.

Investment and Infrastructure

To support this massive ammonia facility, CF Industries is stepping up with an investment of about $550 million for the necessary infrastructure. And don’t worry; this investment comes with the promise of ongoing service revenue, making it a win-win situation for all partners involved!

Each partner in the joint venture will manage product offtake according to their ownership percentage, which adds a nice touch of organization to this ambitious initiative. Additionally, Occidental Petroleum’s subsidiary, 1PointFive, has been selected to handle the transportation and sequestration of carbon dioxide. This means around 2.3 million metric tons of CO2 will be earmarked for responsible management each year. Sequestered at 1PointFive’s Pelican Sequestration Hub in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, this initiative underscores the commitment to environmental sustainability.

Technological Innovations at Play

To make all this happen, a significant contract exceeding $1.1 billion for engineering, procurement, and module fabrication has been awarded to Technip Energies NV. They will be collaborating with Topsoe A/S to employ the SynCOR ATR ammonia plant technology, further enhancing the facility’s capabilities. The emphasis is on building a robust low-carbon ammonia value chain that is sure to meet the ever-growing global demand.

Looking Ahead

With this venture, these three major companies are not just building a facility—they’re paving the way for collaboration among industries to achieve decarbonization goals. The leadership behind this initiative is confident that it will play a vital role in advancing a reliable and affordable low-carbon ammonia supply chain.

The project showcases the U.S. as a key market for low-carbon solutions, and it emphasizes the importance of establishing a global value chain for low-carbon ammonia. By working together, these corporations are not only investing in their futures but are also contributing to a cleaner, greener world.

As we look forward to the operations of this facility starting in 2029, it’s clear that great things are on the horizon for Louisiana and, indeed, the planet.
