NEW ORLEANS, La. — A motorcyclist died after an early Saturday crash on westbound Interstate 10 near the Louisa Street exit, and the New Orleans Police Department is investigating whether another vehicle hit him after he was thrown into the travel lanes.
Police said the wreck happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, on the westbound side of the interstate in eastern New Orleans. Officers said the rider lost control after handling the motorcycle in an unsteady way, struck a metal barrier beside the highway and was thrown onto the pavement.
Investigators said a vehicle they have not identified then came through that same stretch and may have hit the man as he lay in the road. New Orleans EMS crews took him from the scene for emergency treatment. He was later pronounced dead after arriving at a hospital.
Police have not released the victim’s name or age and have described him only as an adult man. They have not offered a description of the second vehicle, a license plate, or where that vehicle went after the possible second impact. They also have not said whether anyone has been detained.
The department is treating the case as a possible hit-and-run. Anyone who saw what happened on Interstate 10 near the Louisa exit, or who has other information from that hour, was asked to contact New Orleans police investigators.
Officials have not named the hospital where the rider was taken and have not said whether they consider a specific driver a suspect. The known outline remains the one police released: a motorcycle wreck near the Louisa Street exit, followed by the chance that a passing vehicle struck the rider before help arrived.
