NEW ORLEANS, La. — Election workers in New Orleans spent Monday inspecting voting machines and trucking them to more than 100 polling sites across the city, the final big step before voters head to the polls Tuesday.

Voting runs from 6 in the morning until 8 at night. Anyone already standing in line at closing time will still get to cast a ballot.

Orleans Parish Clerk of Court Chelsey Napoleon said setup has gone smoothly, helped by a wave of new poll workers. She said her office trains its poll commissioners months in advance, added new ones this cycle and is still recruiting more.

Napoleon also cautioned that a handful of New Orleans polling places have moved. Voters should confirm where they are assigned before leaving home, since Election Day sites can be different from the locations used for early voting. The state offers a polling place lookup and sample ballots on the GeauxVote website and mobile app.

Bring identification. Voters need a driver’s license or another photo ID that carries a signature.

The ballot is long. Races for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House share it with a Public Service Commission contest, local offices and proposed amendments. Secretary of State Nancy Landry has warned that ballots crowded with races and propositions may take voters longer to finish, which could mean longer lines, and she asked voters to be patient with election workers.

Campaigning near the polls is off limits. State law bans electioneering within 600 feet of a polling place entrance, and that includes wearing shirts, hats or buttons with candidate names or campaign slogans. Results will be posted on GeauxVote after polls close Tuesday night.
